Tuto how to jump on a foil kite

Postby Mellowyellow » Sun Jun 18, 2023 2:56 pm

Hello. Do you know some good tutorial to learn how to jump with a twintip on a foil kite ?
I ve been jumping for 10 years on a tube kite.
I bought a airwave koala 8 m. It’s pretty much the same as a flysurfer soul.

But I can feel that the timing for jumping and sheeting in and out are very different from a tube kite.

Therefore a good tuto would be useful.

Thanks.

You could always take a look and analyze Jamie Overbeek or Olly Bridge videos which do bigair on water. Sure there are other nice foilkite jumpers and trickters too, Lukash kite4fun, Lolobsd, Superkiteday, ...

I am interested in this topic, too. Jumping with foil and my Soul 12 but I think kite handling should be simimar for TT? I also watched the videos but can't see all the details. So maybe you can help me, too.

My kite is trimmed to not backstall when fully powered. Currently I go full speed then aggressively steer the kite up from ten o clock or higher from 45 degrees. Sometimes the kite is more in the powerzone, sometimes more at the edge of the wind window. Don't know what is better. At 11 o clock I sheet out (don't know if this is helpful or not). Then I edge hard and at 12 full power the bar and jump.

When coming down from the apex of the jump the kite will be slightly behind me. I sheet a bit out then slowly steer over twelve. Short before landing I steer aggresively down. Sheeting out and slowly steering over twelve seemed to soften my landings.

Sometimes on higher jumps I steer the kite back and forth in the air while coming down. Some kind of "double movement". That was suggested for LEIs to stop them overflying. No idea if this helps. I often underjumped the kite. Don't exactly know why it got better but currently I don't have this problem anymore.

My highest jump was only 8.5 meters with the help of a gust and I didn't land it. So there is much potential for improvement.

Thanks for your help!

not sure a foil kite is that much different from a tubekite.

most of the jump comes from edging hard without losing speed, explosive extension of the body, and in the same timing, the kite must pull you vertical.

sometimes I give a friend (tubekite rider) a try with my foilkite (pansh kestrel)... and everyone manage to jump very well without any change of the process compared to tube.

jamie jumps very high, because he is very very powered, and explosive pop in same time, and he is clever, he always chose places where the wind is a little vertical, inland, or offshore, gusty, and hope to jump at the exact moment of the gust.

I would love to see pro riders here, with normal wind.
I have a friend, his best jump was 16m here in 45 knots, and when he went to south africa, his best jump was 25 m!!

Just like with any kite.

:naughty:

But for sure the FS Soul is close to best foil for jumping.

Now, if someone sends me a Kastrel 10m to compare with v1 and v2 Soul, Im here ;)

No matter what u do on 12m, there wont be huge jumps simply coz 12 is very slow.

The best Soul jumper is 8m on >30kn. But thats scarry stuff.

Still, ppl jump real high with HF on "light" wind. This is due to water release. You are not "glued" to water, no edging, just pure awesome lift off.
How high? On 15kn 10m no probs.

Its all about kinetic energy. Simply put, practise >100h and u will get there. No one can tell u how to do it, because no two ppl are the same, plus environment and gear.

The seat harness with a foil kite can help. And no, we cant fully backstall Soul. That means huge throw on a bar.

Use it.

Having a long arms also helps. See? Thats personal. If one has short hands, this means short throw, no huge jumps. Hence seat harness to lower the bar reach.

Also, super small release loop lowers the reach.

All that combined might result in high jumps. Plus guts.

It's certainly different, I've also considered raising the same issue. I'm using a Kitech FS, which is relatively similar to a LEI but it's really quite different to jump, not necessarily so much in the timing but in the sheeting of the bar. I now make a point of depowering in the air but I'm still struggeling a bit on when exactly to do that. Having said that, I'm not using an original bar. A slight detail.. But I think it's trimmed allright. Interesting stuff..

there are some 12m jumps here with the same process... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8wV4TDtFAQ or here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7OKvHHN0f8

if you can't do that, (maybe because oversheeting before having power for example), most of the time it means your kite has not enough cambered airfoil -> make your mixer more agressive, look at flysurfer explanation about mixers.. (or change your kite)
