R1 V4 vs Chrono V4

Postby fernmanus » Sat Jul 01, 2023 4:43 am

I have a R1 V4. It is an amazing kite. However, some of the bridles are very light weight and are prone to breakage.

What I like about the R1 V4:
1. Incredibly light bar pressure- this allows you to ride this kite very powered up
2. Nearly vertical jumps - better than any other kite I have tried for vertical boosting.
3. Stable - I found this kite to be more stable than a Soul. I don’t know how it is possible, but the kite is super stable.
4. Huge depower. This kite has a ton of range.

The last Chrono I owned was a V2. It was not very stable and the depower was poor. Has anyone had experience with both the R1 V4 and Chrono 4? How does the Chrono stack up against the R1.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

I own a chrono v4 11m and a chrono v4 15m ..love them.! snow or water excellent boost, very stable easy quick inflate and launch, lightweight canopy! Light bar pressure. With the range of the kites you may only need an 11m and a 15m to cover most outings. Much thicker bridal lines than the chrono v1 which have used since 2014. (which may compare to the r1v4 in the bridal, not in the canopy material though)

I have a Chrono V4 11m and find it to be much less stable than my old Soul v1 10m was. Launching it is also way more scetchy than launching the Soul was.

But it does have better performance.

Have not flown the R1V4 but own a Chrono V4 11. Easilly the best kite I have ever flown when it comes to handling vs. performance. I would rule out the R1 due to short life expectancy and delicate construction.

I have owned R1v3 and have ridden ChronoV3 and also own Gin Boom (like R1) and Gin Instinct (like chrono). For me the chrono/instinct are so close now to race kite performance that if you aren't racing at national/international level i think the Chrono/Instinct/Sonic are a much better choice for almost everyone. And I ride them for same reasons as you ride the R1v4, crazy performance but with Chrono/instinct you get so much more durability. For me once R1's start misbehaving its a losing battle trying to keep them flying well, for me i only really like race kites when they are new, once they have some miles on them they are a PITA. RE the chrono stability, i think there was a huge stability improvement between v2 and v3 and v4 seems better again, almost as good as Gin Instict ;)

I have chrono v2 13m and never felt it unstable. I have been using it for years and it has never tangled (unless the wind completely dies and kite drops). Sure it can be made even more stable but there is no need :D

I also have had some unstable kites, end of life speed3 and old hq montana iv. They were unstable!

I have also been flying Ozone Chrono’s (V1’s) for years and from personal experience have only experienced kite “instability” issues when flying in unstable/gusty/variable wind conditions. The constant buffeting is very off putting. The Chrono/R1 range of kites being high AR foils and as such are best suited for smooth/constant winds (again from personal experience)
If you fly in an area of gusty winds, then it may just be a question of learning how best to manage the situation.

How is the boostin ability for these high AR foils compair to the Ozone Edge 17 & 19m?

Great Question!

The performance of a high aspect foil kite is so much better.

In a foil kite a 15m foil is roughly equivalent to a 17 Edge. An 18m foil is going to generate more power than a 19m Edge because foil kites are flatter generating more lift per sq meter.

The amount of depower is also greater on a foil. You should be looking at a Gin Instinct, Flysurfer Sonic 4 or Ozone Chrono 4. The Ozone R1 V4 will outperform those 3, but I can’t recommend it due to the flimsy bridles.

I can tell you that I have jumped over 15m high on the 18 Gin Instinct and over 20 on the 15m Instinct. Never got close on the big Edges. Only got that high on an 11m Edge.
