The question is, could he have done something better?

Unfortunately he cut the landing from the shore camera...cannot exactly see how he hits the water.
Because with every crash you should lift up your legs to rather land with your butt, to get the energy away from your board and legs/knees.

Check my how to Video I did on how to do it with straps...here I also explain what I mean:

Good video, especially about crashing, I would only add that when you land, you should try to land with rear of board touching first and then front, this will damp energy more evenly than touching board flat on both legs at the same time

How will that be more evenly than both legs at the same time?

@ solarset; landing is defined as something you are doing, controling.. this is crashing and in the meantime a kite is pulling on a leash..
Like I wrote in the other topic this is IMO equipment failure, think about it.

When touching with rear first you have less surface of board hitting water hence board will sink more spreading energy more evenly over time than if you hit water with board flat both legs same time.
Its similar to landing high jump on smaller board vs larger, smaller board with similar flex/shape will make landing softer

IMO then first leg takes more energy than second leg.

Would be interested to see if there is a sensible way to prevent an involuntary release with the "new" ozone QR - RL's crash & injury look awful. It is admirable that he has suggested the accident was his fault, but for me having watched the video, I would have hoped the system would have required more of a definite input from the rider, as opposed to his hand brushing past the release - imagine if this was a car - whilst driving, one inadvertent input results in the steering wheel falling off, wheels dropping off & engine drops out !

I will go back to my old trusted Ozone QR's for boosting until this gets sorted out.

Sorry Toby,

I am a living proof that this will not work, since when hitting my but the energy transferred to T12-13 with compression fracture of both.

And I was extremely lucky that did not snap my spine completely.

Plus, the impact was only from about 3m.

RE kicking the board off, this is also totally wrong in my books. Exactly how I snapped my ankle. I could easily land any jump in 30cm of water. In boots thats even more easy.

But decided to kick the board, and snapped me ankle. As said, its a choice between snapping ankles or a spine. Or a neck.

People easily forget snowboarders jumping huge jumps and landing them on groomed slope, which is not soft at all.

Here is a very clear view of what actually happened to Ruben, and it has a voice over from Ruben as well.

This explanation is laughable. There was no hand movement in this direction to release it. Or Im blind.

There is however the whole release on an angle as I mentioned before. The chicken dick is causing this in my view. It is impossible to have a release under this angle if the loop can move freely.
But the loop cant move freely and caused excessive forces on one side only.

It is clearly visible a bigger gap on the right side where the pin is at the moment of opening. So something is pushing that side to open.

And that was not his hand. Or the leverage of bar/hand really did open it when everything perfectly aligned.
