We pumped a kite with Helium - any difference?

Postby Toby » Fri Aug 02, 2019 12:49 pm

We pumped one kitesurfing kite with helium and another identical kite with air, and then we gave it to our local crew to see if they could figure out which kite was filled with helium! The results of this blind test may surprise you!

We also experimented filling a foil kite with helium - check out how it went...

before watching video I'd guess - zero difference except one with helium would probably deflate on its own (while sealed) faster.

Consumer "helium" I see in stores is a mix (with air I'd guess) so balloons barely/lazily fly, but once helium molecules escape through rubber, the balloon stays inflated (and drops down), unlike in my childhood they'd deflate completely.

I'd like to see a ram air kite proofed for helium and filled.

The world's supply of helium is limited and we are currently facing shortages. Instead of putting a part of what reserves we have left to good use (such as MRI machines), these people chose to fill a kite with it and give it to a bunch of beginners to see if they can feel a difference. What a bloody waste.

Haven't watched the video either but this test was already done 15 years ago, if my memory is right I think the gain was 200gr for a 12m and yes molecules of helium are so thin the kite deflated after a while.

There is liquid helium used in the superconductiong magnet of MRI scanners.

Better put your helmet on before posting kiteforum today! Looks like the global helium shortage is keeping the wind from blowing.
