At 4:30 it was too risky to use sandbag to launch the ram air
It got stuck in wingtip bridle
Best to just fold a couple feet of wingtip and put a pile of sand on it that will slide off at launch

Many kiters make a day of it and never inspect their kites after having sat for 3 or more hours on the beach
Sure the kites were pumped correct at 7/8 PSI but if air has leaked even a little bit it could be down to 4 PSI
Not safe to launch or control once it is up flying
So rider must go SEE and FEEL the LE BEFORE asking for help to launch
If you skip that step and ask someone experienced the launcher will feel the noodle kite and abort the launch
Someone not experienced will just hold the kite and do nothing to prevent launch

I'm curious about this beach in Cuba. Would these people be predominantly tourists, or locals, or a mix? I have never been to Cuba for kiting. Are there kite schools in Cuba?

I know Cuba is a popular destination for kiters from many countries (especially Canada), but I don't know anything about local schools and local (Cuban) kiters. I'm wondering if these mishaps involve self-taught locals, poorly taught tourists, or both.

...
Not Me ; i have no desire, to be around , a bunch of people like
that ! I don't even like kiting with people i don't know ; had trouble
with that in the past.
A lady asked me to launch her kite , a few years back ; when i asked
her how long she bin kiting ...
she told me there wasn't any wind, the day she had her (1) lesson.
Then got MAD at me for walking away.
If i had launched her , the son would'a sewed me , when his Mom died ;
it was blowing 30kt , that day , (she was on a 13m , and weighed maybe 50-kg).
Just Fricken STUPID ; no Not ignorant , (i said Stupid) !!!

8 hours on a busy beach. Is it really that bad? Film any busy intersection for 8 hours and I'm pretty sure one will find quite a lot of interesting behaviour.

Not suggesting one should accept unsafe behaviour, but I honestly expected worse.

unbelievable what mistakes are being made...90% of kiters have no clue about safety.

A must for everyone to be safer is the safety video I made:

https://strictlyhooked.com/viewtopic.php?f=107&t=2464
Toby, that's a really nice instructional video you've produced, kudos. However, I would add just a couple of things regarding safety

1 - Avoid attaching the leash to the back of the harness, it might make it very difficult to eject completely the kite in an emergency situation

2 - When overpowered, I don't agree one should hold the board and body drag to the shore. IMHO it's much safer if you keep your board on your feet and your kite low, and then slowly direct yourself to the shore. That way you have much more leverage than only your body to oppose and control an overpowered kite!

Wow, that looked like a lot of people that really had no clue at all, right in the middle of the crowd, putting everyone in danger. 🤯

You really need to have your head on a swivel at that beach. 🤦‍♂️

Thx oksman

1. I agree. See Gear Video: https://strictlyhooked.com/viewtopic.php?t=2465

2. Depends. With a board in your hand you can still drag upwind...if needed. If not, sure, keep it on your feet is a good option.

I have a good track record of avoiding that beach - 10 years. I did something that looked even funnier though while in Cuba. I used a kite compression strap to tether launch from the umbrella pole. The plastic buckle broke and the kite went after the horse behind the dune.

Just wow. I will never been going to kite beach.
#1 mistake. Nearly everyone seems to be overpowered on a kite way bigger than they really need. Judjing from the trees on the sea conditions looks like 20~25knots? Im seeing 9s, 10, 12s....with long lines???? Id be lit on my 6~7m2.
I dont see the difficulty, the wind seems cross onshore?? Why are people dropping their kites? Is there a wind shadow on the right side?
If gusty keep your kite LOW and hurry and get your ass in the water.
Signal you want to land BEFORE you reach the beach.
