Why Wind in the US Blows 14% Stronger than Europe & Limits of the Forecast

Postby Toby » Fri Jan 31, 2020 5:31 pm

If you compare an American wind sensor to a European wind sensor measuring the same wind, the American one will show 14% higher maximum sustained wind. Why is that? And why should you care? The root of the issue lies in what this number, the wind speed measurement, means. In this video you will discover the truth about wind readings as well as find out what the forecast numbers really tell you that will change the way you look at them forever.

That was informative ; Thanks for posting ! :thumb:

Nearly all my outdoor sports, will rely on a forecast for wind speed , on that
day , because i have a sport that can cover anything from 0 to 40-kt ; after
40 , i'm heading inside with some whiskey and a sewing machine, or X-acto
knife, (depending on what needs fixing , on my equipment).

Most of us that use a forecast model for wind ; will average at least 3 different
forecast stations, for our decision.

At one of my local spots there are two different wind meters on the same station, one a mechanical/propeller anemometer type and the other a sonic anemometer type. There is a 1-5 knot difference between the two with the sonic always being higher especially if the wind speed is 15 knots or more. A sonic anemometer is supposed to be more accurate.

Nice video. Would be good to discuss with longer averages how sometimes can vary wildly. Like say with an average of 5knots where 50% of the time is 10knots and to other is 0knots.

Bringing up a home weather station, I started a thread on them. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2405495
