Is Surfing better than Kitesurfing? | Get High with Mike

Postby Gethighwithmike » Wed Apr 08, 2020 3:07 pm

Is Surfing better than Kitesurfing? A question that's been on my mind for a few years now, since I started kitesurfing. In this video I compare these 2 phenomenal sports and share my insights to try and figure out which is better! (DUN DUN DUN DUUUUN!) I've been kiting for 6 years and surfing for 10 (8 of which were super active). In these years of die hard devotion to these sports, I've traveled to many of the world's best destinations and spent many of my waking and sleeping hours obsessed with them. I guess this puts me in a position where I can give a decent answer.
I know this is a contentious topic and I want to hear your thoughts too! Nyeowww!

FPH (Fun per hour) is way too low for surfing for me.

To this day I am still mystified why more people arent into a combo of waves and boosting at the same time. To me thats where the glory is. Ride a wave in, boost on the way out.
Boom. So much more FPH.

FPH! I like that. That's pretty much what makes kiting win for me 😛

They are what they are to the person doing them. What I would say is be open to both if you are lucky enough to live somewhere where you can surf and kite. Learning new things is intimidating /hard when you are really good at one sport already but you may well find yourself with an adjusted brain after some time full fo stoke... progression periods in these sports are amazing times. As for perceived aggression of surfers - random aggression is very rare - if you know the rules before you head out. It is that simple.

Perfect 6ft skeleton bay or a perfect kiting day, i'd go kiting......

as if i would do that, wtf! lol

It's all about what conditions you have available. Kiting is a much more varied sport with more possibilities for a good session in different conditions, encompassing TT free-riding, big air, freestyle, SB wave riding, foiling etc. The spots (& the conditions) delivering a good surfing session are much harder to come by ... unless you live close to a spot that has great conditions on a frequent basis. Recently, paddle surfing/ foiling is going some way to improving the odds for surfing.

Surfing is better for the working man because there's no wind at 6am and you can get your waves before heading in to the 9-5.

The big problem with surfing is the crowds. There's a silver lining in that the scarsity of waves really pushes you to explore remote beaches or do crazy things like surf at midnight but after enough splash fights with spoiled jerks it loses its luster.

When the wind blows it's in abundance for everyone and you have freedom and speed from the moment your kites in the sky until the moment it hits the ground. I'm loving this new sport.

Wave boosting - also my favourite type of kiting. Luckily I’m much better riding waves in one direction and much better boosting the other way so works perfectly...
