Incredible! Any info on what size kite and strength wind? Must have been really overpowered, but now I am inspired to try out my big kite again if this is possible!

He's got to be using some form of sea anchor. If you look at the kite direction relative to the wind there is no way he could avoid floating downwind without some form of sea anchor.

... motivating beginners to do stupid things with kites or at least take them for stupid?

At some point in the video (at 0.55 and at 1.38), he seems to be going backwards (upwind).
How can you go upwind with a sea anchor?
