Local Beach: Playa Malvin in downtown Montevideo.
Favorite Beaches: We are blessed with some great beaches here in Uruguay and, on occasion, some pretty epic conditions as well.
I enjoy kiteboarding anywhere I can in Uruguay be that in Montevideo, or at one of the many beaches, rivers or Laguna's further outside the city.
I've also been lucky enough to kite the North Coast of Brasil, Cabarete and Paracas in Peru.
Style: With a smile on my face
Gear: We have a great Ozone dealer here in Montevideo who gives excellent customer service, kite repairs and payment plans. So, of course I have a bunch of Ozone Kites. 3 Edges of different sizes and an Enduro. My board is also Ozone.

Learning to Land my jumps with a Down Loop

Postby Kiteboarding Uruguay » Sun Apr 04, 2021 11:35 pm

Hi Forum friends,

New edit from down here in Uruguay as I look to progress my kite looping skills.

In this video I attempted to land jumps with a down loop for the first time.

Please, any tips, advice of best practices that you can share would really be appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance!

Nick

Be interested in this. Watched a few YouTube vids and just can’t work out how you don’t get yanked downwind when doing a down loop at the end of a jump.

That is good question. Mainly it is because when down looping at the correct spot/time it loops far away from the center of WW. I do down loops on ice too, then it also gives good pull out of jump. Sometimes down loop catches me (a bit like heli loop) but if not it doesn't matter at all

Seen that video and a few others and it’s a good one. Problem is they show someone with a huge amount of skill doing it perfectly. That’s not always the most helpful when trying to learn yourself. Seeing someone else going through the learning process makes a refreshing change.

To learn it, maybe think of it as half a heli-loop (landing loop, whatever). When you send the kite to jump, send it just past 12:00 & then do the downloop with the front hand so the kite stays high in the window for longer as it goes through 12:00 and then forward/down & right back up a bit. The kite doesn’t need to be going up to catch you softly, as long as it is moving and above your head there will an upward pull to soften the landing. Then it’s just timing, has to after the apex on the way down. You also need to have the board pointing downwind and you can ride either direction from there. As you get the timing dialed you can send it later and land in the other direction as a true downloop transition. Hope that makes sense and helps a bit.

Edit; when learning probably should not pull anything at all at the apex with the kite at 12:00. There is no line tension and things get weird quick. :bye:

Thank you Simon, I really appreciate your comment!

I'll be doing more videos on learning different aspects of looping the kite, so please (only if you feel like it) subscribe on YouTube to catch all of them!

Cheers,

NIck

Surprised you're just learning heli/down loops after learning kite loops. That's a fairly aggressive progression track :P.

Points:
1. The definition varies, but most people say down loops are front hand, heli loops are back hand.
2. Usually the definition of a heli or down loop is flying the kite past 12 overhead to "catch" you and give a secondary lift or slow down your descent. These are late kiteloops.

Tips:
1. 1:57 - kite position stuck at 12 - neither direction are you landing this cleanly
2. 2:07 - kite position stuck at 12, but you let the bar out allowing the kite to fly a bit more overhead to not drag you hard forward in the loop
3. 2:22 - don't loop with the bar out, it creates a larger, more powerful loop. Would've been a good downloop had you kept the bar in and just pulled your front hand as the kite was about 12:30.
4. 2:42 - as you said in the video, "a bit late". This is what I would tell people to do when they're learning powered kiteloops.
5. 3:00 - kite position stuck at 12 - landed because your jump was high/long enough to all the kite to recover overhead
6. 3:16 - kite position at 12, or even 12.30 - front hand hockey stick it.
7. 3:30 - kite position at 12.30
8. 3:42 - I can watch you think you've gone too high and slightly redirect back to the left, then pull the loop. This is exactly what you want to do. Except don't let the bar out and pull about .2s earlier.
9. Few others you just need to jump higher, have the kite a bit more to 11.30, and pull slightly earlier, which you surmised in the video.
10. 4:25 - Yes. Kite flown back to the left, then redirected overhead for a soft landing. Well done. This is a baby heli :)

Basically, as knotwindy said, fly the kite through 12 when you're doing the loop. For you as a left foot forward jumper, park the kite at 12:30 until you're descending. From there, front hand (left hand) down and bring the kite past 12 for a downloop. If you want to heli-loop, redirect the kite back to 11:30, then right hand down on the descent.

PS. Leave the bar all the way in when you jump.

Just to confuse things a bit further, definitions as I was taught;
Downloop is 180 degrees, needs a transition in riding direction
Heli-loop is a loop overhead that catches you as you land, it can be to either direction as long as it passes through 12:00 as you are on the way down.
If the kite is to the left, pull right. If the kite is to the right, pull left. If you are in the air long enough you can wiggle the kite back and forth and choose the side you want to help-loop to.
The point of the help-loop after a powered loop is to get the kite back in front of you as you probably will have swung underneath it.
Hope that didn’t make things worse.
