Did he let go on purpose or did something fail. Looked like he unhooked on purpose and maybe couldn't hold on?

All I can say is that I don't think I would survive a thumping like that.

He unhooked on purpose let the kite go so he could pure surf the wave without the kite pulling him tried to get in a good bottom turn but hit some nasty chop lost his edge. That must have hurt.

Unimaginable that someone can survive such a wipeout. Worst nightmare I can think of...

Wow, what a crash.
That force that smacks him down must be a lot...already squeezing a lot of air out of him...and then all the mass of water washing him.
No fun at all !
Glad he is ok after that.
