I only ride surfstyle in waves and know everything about short tackers but can't understand how you can short tack on flat water as there is no reference point (the waves) ?

I'm still not sure why it's a problem...?
Here the problem is people getting right in up your ass, and refusing to tack... so you get pushed right into shore or breakwater along the river mouth, or have to just come to a complete stop. Really sucks when the wind has dropped and you're struggling to get away from the beach.
Thankfully, foiling has solved that problem.

Long tackers are not good either

I'm always fascinated by the number of idiots kiting. I always spend the first minutes either on the beach or on the water trying to figure out the "rhytm" of the riding - where people like to jump, turn etc. - so that I don't unintentionally end up getting in the way - and hopefully enough others are doing the same not to get in my way as well.

Now that would be very respectful.
On the lagoons people enter without looking and carrying...doing the same over and over, and they just get in front of you and don't leave you any space anymore.
I look out for them, why do they look out for me?
Luckily not all, but some are a real hassle.
Still enough space for everyone to have fun, even when it includes a bit of waiting.

I think but I'm not sure that a short tacker is someone who goes into the flat then instead of exiting down wind they turn around and right into someone who was waiting their turn for the rotation
I'm not sure if it matters unless you have a photographer there then the entire group is lined up waiting their turn.
Short tacking might be something else maybe it stands for a pro that is angry because a beginner is right in their way?
Short tacking it's a mystery.

For me a short tacker in flat water is when you are in line in the rotation and a kiter coming out tacks in front and downwind of you so that you have no room for your jump/tricks. It's like cutting in line instead of going to the rear and waiting their turn.
