I really prefer this method over upper line in any but the lowest winds.
Especially for light kites that can lift of again without anything to hold them down in the parked position.

This is also a great way to self-land a strutless kite

 you knew I'd comment on it

I'd let the bar go then pin the kite down by first walking upwind a few meters

Then detach from CL and leash.

Easy here to grab lower front line since it is close by.

On some kite bars you have to go up a center line (s) 4m to 12m long before being able to grab the lower front.

When you are grabbing lower line you are moving yourself upwind anyway....so why not do that before climbing the line.

It should prevent any movement of the kite drifting downwind like it did there.

Thanks for video.

Thanks for the comment. I normally don't let the kite drift downwind but was doing it pretty fast so the video would look better. Self landing videos that take 5 minutes are boring. I got it done under 30 seconds.

Same. This method can be used in 30+ if you really have to. I only use the upper line method in around 15 knots.

You are saving me the trouble of making a video
So thanks
People can just visualize
😉

I do just like that with excellent results....except :

1- let bar out but stay attached with kite in C position.
2- then walk upwind a few meters to pin & crunch kite.
3- grab 2 lines keeping kite in C shape while it luffs.
4- go hand over hand walking myself gradually 60 degrees upwind all the way to the kite.
5- grab upper bridle to get to the LE and put kite LE down
6- put sand to weigh down canopy
7- detach and put clean bar on canopy

Kite stays still in C form with no movement during whole process.
Cannot take off or tumbleweed or re-launch.
Kite steering lines are slack and disabled.
Easier to hold two lines than just one.

The fear of not having time to QR does not cross my mind.
The fear of a runaway kite that would hurt property or people is more of the concern.

Yes
Someone got hurt recently but his self-landing could not have been yours or mine.

Take care.
Stay safe.
