Wingsurfing - Intel - forum topic?

Postby scottnorby » Thu May 23, 2019 12:01 am

New topic?
Sup wingsurfing may not seem a big deal to us kiters.
But I can say, first hand, that SPG is selling way more of them than they expected. They make a double strut dihedral. Like most designs but the double strut makes sense.
Anyone have one yet? And Naish is releasing one size— a 4m — in June.

I am just happy this stuff didn't come up 20 years ago instead of kiting...

For sure they won't be WOO clients ;-)

But maybe this is an introduction into kitesurfing? People can easily get into a watersports with this...and if they want the 3rd dimension, they will buy a kite then.

I agree.

And im sure many will convert to kite

Ok i’ll bite: 2 struts seems smart to me, since some of the other wings look a bit too floppy (no wonder waterstarting is hard!).
In the video above you can see old footage of a guy in maui riding fast on a kitewing with rigid frame, juxtaposed with a guy foiling kinda fast on a foil board. The rigid frame in the old kitewings probably gives a significant performance advantage. Defintely looks like it. 2 struts to give more support seems smarter than 1. I have to wonder if it’s enough though.

I want to see/hear a report on how long it takes to get a non watersports person to ride ok on foil board with a wing?

And compared to kiting?

What be interesting to know the difference.

For many locations, like my home location for example, kiting will blow it away hands down every time because kiting gets the wind that is up high all the time. Kiting rules windsports!! 👍🤙

This thing is a waste of money for any beginner in a location like mine. Just go kiting. 😁

A better test would be an already competent sup foiler with no wind experience. I am going with 1 hour vs 1 month to basic competency.

The sup market is huge. Thinking about lake where we visit every summer, there's dozens of people a day paddling past. Every afternoon has 10 to 12kt wind. I've kite foiled it with a 17m involving one of the sketchiest launches ever. No one but a frother like me would kite it....but I could see lots of people trying a wing. Maybe once the 4th generation versions are $100 at Walmart. And yes...once people get a taste I bet some will graduate to kiting elsewhere.

The SUP industry is dead compared to the boom in case you didnt know.

I could be proved wrong but this doesnt seem like a light wind thing simply because to get up onto the foil from deep water looks like a huge PITA.

you could catch sooo many waves at clean side off locations.. super long point breaks

Nah, not on a SUP. That’s too easy.

Foil board, like you see in the vids

Nothing new.

All the "new school" freestyle moves, people where already doing them at the start. Things just go in cycles, C kites then flat kites then C shaped kites, back to flat kites eg Ozone Edge, Crazyfly Hyper, Cabrinha AV8.
