Mast position on Armstrong board

Postby salvino » Tue Sep 01, 2020 7:33 pm

I’m 3 sessions new to winging. I’m 90kg and have been kitefoiling for 5 years.

Flying Ozone Wasp 5m on Armstrong 99l board with 85cm mast on 1850HS foil with 232HS stab.

Wind was patchy with few gusts to upper teens, but only lasting few, precious seconds. I’m able to water start to standing and then increase board speed by feeble pumping, but could not get board to clear water. I’m strapless and have feet where board seems to feel best as it moves on water. The mast is 2 cm from front end of mast tract.

Do I go all the way forward?
Is it just that I was just underpowered for my skill?

It felt so close. I was trying to move rear foot more aft to help with board pump, which seemed to help.

Any advice would be great.

Just keep it at the centre for now.

You are just underpowered for your skill level, thats it

Go out in loads of wind, and you can ride easily - and you will soon find out if you want to stand further rear or forward, and can move track accordingly.

And from then you can slowly go out in less and less wind.

I have found that bigger wings tend to have a slightly different trim position, than smaller wings - odd but true.
So little difference that I dont move the tracks though.

Of course wingfoil wings, not hydrofoil wings.... Confusing it is the same word

I'm 108kg and made my own wings viewtopic.php?f=107&t=2407093 which are very comparable in area to your armstrong but likely thicker for more low speed lift than the armstrong. I'm in a similar situation to you except I have strong Wellington winds available. I haven't learnt to pump the foil yet but I can get lift from about 16 knots with my Naish S25 5.3M wind wing. The foiling is very new to me, enough wind and I have no trouble getting my board lifting out of the water but Sunday and Monday have been my first progress after beefing up the mast/fuselage and fuselage/front wing joint's strength. Monday I only got half an hour in the water and only a few minutes in consistent depth but I got the board (F-one inflateable) to be just kissing the wave tips for some runs. This Friday and Saturday hopefully I'll start getting some good runs. Try to find somewhere with waves to give you an assist to start. I tried my board with a paddle Sunday morning but the waves were big and fast moving, slower and smaller would be preferrable for learning.

I have used the 1850 underpowered kiting & prefer it moved it forward on my t38 board. My back foot seems happiest over the rear half of the mast.

the HS1850 while large, is a modern slim wing. So it doesn’t have the massive beginner lift of older thick foils.

That being said, it does go in very light wind with good pump technique. You will need to be more powered as a newbie until you have the pumping skill.

I prefer the HS1850 with 300 tail and +1 shim. So that is the bigger tail, but shimmed with the lowest angle of attack. The smaller 232 tail needs to be shimmed for a higher angle of attack (0 shim) per Armstrong web site.

Arggh,

I just realized I was using +1 shim and probably should have the 0 degree on for learning!

That explains the way the foil felt underfoot as I was getting board speed up.

Hopefully can try today
