Winging is half-assed kite foiling - discuss

Winging is massively easier to learn than kiting. No lessons and no danger. Basically free rig just in lesson cost savings.

Usually quite quick for a competent kiter or surf foiler. And really quick for a competent Windsurfer...seen them doing it in minutes

Note I didn't say it's easy, just that its easier than kiting. Seems to vary a lot for people. Took me probably 10 sessions to stay upwind. Other friends were competent in first 5 minutes. I figure half my initial errors were wrong gear and wrong situation, avoidable for those who follow.

I think it’s easier than kitefoiling. I’m gonna teach my kids on the wing first before a kite. No harness, no dearth loop potential. No chance of lofting. You can sit and flat and take a break. You can practice at less than foiling speed. I’m gonna teach my kids with a sup first and then a foil when they can comfortably wing downwind on a SUP

Trouble with this is you'll have to have your kids out there in at least 15 knots.

I teach my kid to kite with a 5m Peak 4 in 8-10 knots of wind. This means:
- warm thermal seabreezes that I 100% for sure know wont kick up to 15+ knots
- knee deep water
- no leash (if you disconnect the kite it just sinks)
- no lofting (Peak's don't generate any lift)

Really the key about teaching kids is find something they are interested in actually learning so if winging proves more popular with the kids all the better.

I'm not really worried about being out in 15 knots. That would be normal for learning to kite on a twintip anyway. Also, I don’t see why we wouldn't be able to practice on a sup in 5 or 10 knots. Also it shouldn't take much wind to get a 60lb child up on foil. 10 knots
seems pretty doable, but even if it’s not, 15 seems fine for learnings to me.

I've had my one daughter (13) on and off with a kite but she hasn't quite got the hang of it. It feels like there's more danger with kiting, there's a lot of things that can go wrong, particularly at the learning phase. I might be looking to switch her out to winging this season.
My younger daughter (10) who hasn't started, I'm not planning on offering her kiting as an option.
