Problem Inflating and Deflating Ozone Wasp

Postby skideeppow » Sat Oct 31, 2020 11:49 pm

HI, I am new to wing foiling. Just picked up an Ozone Wasp 5m and having a real hard time getting the center strut to inflate, and it is impossible to get it to deflate.
Seems like the hose is too narrow? (see pix).

Am I missing something here

Thanks for any help.

It's an exercise in patience.

The WASP designer should have a look at the duotone unit for some guidance.

A lot of wings are like this, not only the Wasp.

Make sure the clip is completely off, it will eventually inflat/deflate.

Yes the dump valve on Duotone is great.

Have you tried rolling up the strut first?

As mentioned above, most wings have similar issues. The air will eventually fill your strut bladder once the leading edge has significant pressure in it. Be careful and make sure the strut bladder is seated all the way in it's casing. If there isn't structure to support the bladder it will burst.
When deflating, take your time and roll the strut up from the trailing edge towards the leading edge. If you rush it, it will pop. The leading edge bladder supports the strut bladder when it's inflated but when it is deflated there isn't any support for the strut bladder. NEVER force the air out of your wing. If you need to hang it to dry, do so from the last handle on the strut. Also, do not shake your wing out and dislodge the strut bladder from it's proper position in the casing.

Skiddeeppow, if you are having problems inflating and deflating the wasp center strut, it could be that you have a kink (sharp bend) in the hose connecting the strut. Other than that inflating and deflating (rolling center strut to deflate) should be straight forward.

Inflate: it'll start to fill once bladder is 3/4 hard, pressure equalizes through the small tube.

Deflate: key is the tube can't be kinked, so you can't deflate if wing is folded.

I put in a pinch valve like for kites, to isolate the bladders, and I leave centre strut inflated on the 6m, put it in a windsurf sail bag.

Next gen wings tend to have a separate dump valve for strut, or no tube connector at all (one less thing to leak or fail).

Im surprised by how fragile the strut bladder is on the wasp. Ive tried to be careful rolling up my wing and have had 3 pops. Really wish I had a dump valve and a reasonable source for new strut bladders. Most online sales sell the LE bladder and the strut as one kit. That's a bummer because I dont need them both. Fortunately my online retailer has had exceptional customer support. Has anyone tried alternative bladders for the center strut?

Or get a wing with a boom - problem solved :naughty:

Ha haa, sorry, just teasing, couldnt resist....

I love the boom eventhough the minority might have this preference - or is it more a matter of only two brands offering a boom, so they are the minority thus reflecting what is used?

It is actually a sincere question, maybe it should have its own thread

But related to this thread a lot

Ok but everything I have read says not to force the air out because it will pop or blister the bladder.
