advise on new setup - Armstrong vs Axis

Postby Frankieboy » Wed Jan 20, 2021 9:16 am

Hi,

What are your thoughts on those 2 setups:

Axis: carbon mast, HPS1050 + HPS930 OR 1150 + 910
Armstrong: HS1850 + HS1250

100kg intermediate, from 15 to 30 knots on open sea, the more wind the more waves
Looking to ride (wind)waves and start wing-downwinding

Anyone experience with those foils? I am moving from a Moses setup 1100/790

Tx !

Axis for sure. Tons of options of foils with many more on the way. The 1050+930 is awesome for winging. Those are actually my favorite two foils to wing. If you were going to sup foil also then the 1150/910 set up.
Also Axis has a super stiff mast which is great for the bigger foils.
Armstrong has a great finish and construction but they lack the performance options. Great beginner and tow in foils but I haven't ridden one that I liked yet for winging. I'd go with Axis, Moses, and Neil Pryde over the Armstrong in that order.

yep, is an option but I find the Moses range pretty limited for winging.
It looks like a downsize of the 1100 which I don't really like. Great lowend but too slow for my liking even if pro's are supposed to push it to 25knots...
Might try the 425 stab though...

Agree Axis has most options by far,and if your a heavier rider even better the 19mm mast and fuse connection with the large wings us heavier riders need sometimes is the stiffest mast/ fuse I’ve tried minimal flex riding huge wings, I got Axis originally for winging but soon found out they are great supfoil foil as well.A lot of new stuff coming out too hard to beat IMO

Have you tried the 1000 wing or is it too small for you?

Never tried
What could be the lowend @100kg?
I know surface area is obsolete but it is only 1000!

do you find the gap 1050/930 to be good?

I'm 175 lbs and the 1050 with an ensis 5.2 gets me going in 10 knots with power. I can stay on that foil well into 20+ knots and just drop the wind wing size. Once it's 15 knots then I can go on the 930 without pumping. Haven't found a high end limit to the 930 yet and I've been in over 40 knots with it. Hope ensis makes a 1.8 wing soon for those days. The HPS stuff is super effecient and once you're on foil past the initial lift, you don't need to add much more front foot pressure as speed increases so you can easily drop into bigger waves with a bigger foil and you don't have the blow out of going too fast and the lift being too much to hold down. This also allows you to not have to hang over the front foot so much when going down steeper faces. The HPS wings like to be ridden a little further back in the tracks than you would ride the red series stuff. If I can't get going on the 5.2 ensis and 1050, then it's usually not worth me going out. I've had several times I'll be riding that set up and crash after a jump and when I get back on the board, it feels like there's no wind. I do a few pumps of wing and board, instant lift off and I'm back to riding glassy conditions.

Hello slingshotucf,

Interesting infos, thanks!
What is your wingding style? What do you love to do? Are you the cruising, surfing, jumping, freestyling wingdinger?
This will allow me to adjust my perception of your love for the HPS :°)

Cheers
