Wing foiling with a kid

Postby Jyoder » Tue Feb 09, 2021 5:26 pm

How feasible would it be to wing foil with a child on the board with you? I’ve seen kids riding with kiteboarding adults on twin tips, with the kid standing between the adult’s legs and looping their arms around the adults upper legs. A bit dangerous though, in my opinion, as so much can go wrong with a kite.

I’m guessing that it would work ok on a wing foil setup too and could be a fun and accessible way to share the sport with a child.

Anyone done it?

I would say it's probably more dangerous winging than kiting due to the need for a foil for winging. Reasonable chance you could fall on top of the kid on top of the foil.

We did it! After three sessions just sailing around getting practice with my 4 year old sitting on the board between my legs, we have lift off! Foiling long reaches easily! Surprisingly, the balance isn’t very difficult even if he moves around a little. Big wide board 100+ liter board, Slingshot infinity 84 foil (very stable). 4m wind. Helmets and PFDs. Lots of practice jumping off the board and climbing back on for fun to build up confidence. Stoked!!

I have had a few foil sessions with my son when he was around 55lbs. He would sit with his legs crossed, facing forward, in the area just in front of my front foot placement. Winds around 14knots and using a 2400 and 6m wing. Would stay low on foil, and go at a nice cruisy speed, and managed quiet nicely. He loved it and thought he was floating. A bit of adjustment to the riding position due to the extra weight so far forward.

After a few trial runs last summer, we had a big success yesterday. At almost 5 years old, he’s comfortable enough crashing and floating, and still light enough to allow for a nice session, flying gybes and all. Haven’t figured out how to switch my feet on foil with him onboard, so long toeside tacks are tiring, but he’s having fun “flying!”

I think the key is a big board and big foil so the risk of taco-ing is low
