Chris Bertish to attempt wing-foil across Pacific

As a South African one has to be proud of this guy. He's done some great big wave surfing and SUPing, and on a large "SUP" he crossed the Atlantic a few years ago. Now aiming for a Pacific crossing this northern summer on a "wing-foil". No images of the craft, which it seems to me could hardly be expected to foil if it looks anything like his trans-Atlantic SUP, but who knows. California to Hawaii.

Would that not be half way across the pacific? I have done the whole way by boat (yes very different and infinity more comfortable) and there is a lot of water after Hawaii.

To catch the trades he's looking at a 2400 knot journey.
16 hours a day at 15 knots makes it a 10 day trip.
Only way I see him doing this is having a support boat and sleeping on that, which is clearly cheating.

By 2400 knot I assume you mean 2400 Nautical Miles? (=2762 miles or 4445 kilometers)

I believe he is building a modified version of the "SUP" he used for the Atlantic crossing, which is basically a slightly smaller and lighter version of the boats that rowers use for ocean crossings. Something he can sleep and cook and navigate on. What I don't understand is how he thinks he can get it up on foil. Frankly, while I admire these efforts, and doing it solo and unsupported is a major challenge, at least half their speed is conferred by the following currents, waves, and wind. Any adverse condition they deploy a sea anchor or parachute and ride it out till following current, waves, and wind return.

If you come completely out of the water in the open ocean, you become extremely unstable, and you can’t sustain that in such a rough environment. But in this case the foils will engage at around 3 to 4 knots, stabilizing the craft and making it faster. But I am definitely not going to be up on the foil in the open ocean. That would just be the definition of insanity, and you would not survive. You wouldn’t even get 10 days in.

So not really foiling.
