In the Real review (around 1:30) the reviewer mentions wings “bagging out by 30 days” and “ripping in half by 60 days”. He implies this is a common issue with other branded wings. I’m hoping this is just a little exaggeration. I find it hard to believe this is a common occurrence.

So, what kind of useful life are you guys getting out of your wings?

Ripping in half by 60 days is complete bulls**t. So don't worry about that.

I have been keeping very detailed data on the wings On have been testing long term. The "bagging out" or stretching of the Ripstop canopy material starts happening around the 60 Use-hour mark. It gets to it's worst around 130-150 hours.

The wings still work after that, but just like kites the upwind performance is no longer as good. The wings actually get more grunty as the profile gets deeper.

Also after about 150hours Teijin Ripstop start to degrade on the sun. And around the 200 hours Mark starts to get porous.

So far I have not had a wing rip in half on its own (From any brand). Obviously when the Ripstop canopy material is old, it is easier to rip when you fall into your wing or hit it with your board or foil.

FYI the Nova 5m in my Video had 156 hours before that session. I have had that one since the 13 November 2020.

This is Real's biased criticism of some of the lighter wing brands which they do not carry (such as Fone). It is an exaggeration to help sell the products they carry.

Not a review, but you can see how the wing performs (This is actually a pre production Prototype), especially how well the windows work without having to move the wing.

Hi Gunnar,

Have you managed to log some hours on the final release and what are the main differences to the pre-production proto?
I'm asking as I can can get a 5m 'V1' from a dealer I know, or should I rather wait a bit for the final release to arrive in stock? Thanks

Hi,

Yes. There are a few "pre production versions" so not sure which one you have a chance of getting. But the Final version has quite a few improvements over the protos. They have more pretension, Y Handles and the radial panel layout at the back to the canopy at the strut which makes for a flatter tighter canopy which will make it last longer. I would wait for the final production ones.

I figured. Most reviews are biased to the point of uselessness. However, his statements are pretty much outrageous. Disappointing really.

I bought an A-wing recently. I’m impressed with the quality and looking forward to a long useful product life.

I've had wings from a number of different companies. I now have have all the North Nova wings. They are the best I've used by far.
- These wings are very rigid and grunty when pumping up on foil. I now ride my 5m when i used to go on my 6m from a previous manufacturer...
- Handles are padded and rigid, so you can actually orient the wing with one hand on a handle
- The inflation valves are very smart - locks tight on the standard pump hose - no attachment necessary
- The included wrist leashes as soft, supple and have nice weight - they don't get tangled around your head ;)
- Nice size windows - you can fold them in half to fit in the great travel bags (unlike wings with larger windows)
- Construction seems bomber - i don't imagine they will bag out
- Black colour is stealth looking
Regards,
Tom
