Had my 4th session yesterday in nominal winds (8-10 knots). I am getting up faster on my feet but could not fly on the foil. One funny thing happened when I climbed on the board. My board shorts came untied and went down to my knees. :o Fortunately I was wearing compression shorts underneath. I'm sure some beach goers saw me as I was about 50' from the shore when it happened. Next time I will double tie my board shorts. :D
8-10 is not enough wind to get on the foil as a beginner... 15-20 kn will be better.

It takes some technique to get on the foil in light wind... once on the foil you keep on going... also big wings are not as easy to handle as small wings...

Around here noone, not even the top dogs, rides in less than 12 knots.

In 12 knots, just fine though :D

On the sea the wind is more regular... so can go to a smaller foil... (which is more fun of course)
In extreme light weather yes, but don't really need it at sea... on our inland lake in the other hand yes, need it absolutely....

For average weights, and a tad more, it seems these huge but slow wings are a thing of the past - except for beginners who ditch them quite fast again.

W1100 is 2100 cm2 :o

1500 to 1800 cm2 are often used by beginners nowadays, and a few but not many keep them for low wind.

1000 to 1400 cm2 is often used by non beginners in both high and low wind, experts even less area of course.

Why?

Because the apparent wind is higher, meaning once up on foil, the smaller wing gives the same lift.
Also, the huge wings can not outrun even a slow wave, so almost impossible to surf on even the wind waves

So makes sense you use the W950 which is 1600 cm2 and still a really light wind wing :thumb:

the W1100 is not adapted for use with swell... it's too slow. you're absolutely correct Peter...

Peter I think that local conditions differ a lot, especially if there are no currents/waves available and gusts end up with zero kts for minutes.
Bigger frontwings extend time on the water for those, who can´t or will not add a bigger wing to their quiver or dislike the cons in handling a 8m wing has without doubts.
Navy with his 67kgs isn´t representative for 8m riders around the area I live. I´m sure he needs the smaller front wing as with bigger ones he would feel overpowered as soon the got on foil whatever wind speeds.
It would be interesting to see if he had efficiency losses at all with a combo ltd to 7m CWC. Navy, did you try before you bought the 8m or was it an all in decision ? :bye:
