Most of the people here learned to wing foil without learning to kite foil. Granddad started trying to kite foil but quickly changed to wing and said it was heaps easier.

Children that have never done any foiling can learn to wing foil - i'd put a helmet and impact on them though.
The no1 tip is the opposite of what you would think. Spend the whole time not letting the foil out of the water - back down as soon as it takes off. Then you will know what to do as it flys out of the water trying to eject you later on.

Extremely true, for new wing foilers as well as new kitefoilers.
Learn to Taxi" as we call it when not foiling
As much as possible, then the foiling will come by itself later

I have kitefoiled, windfoiled and wingfoiled and I have to say kitefoiling was the hardest of them all for me by far. I had been riding twin tips for over a decade before I started kitefoiling, so I was familiar with kite handling. With kitefoiling there was way more going on with trying to position the board while steering the kite when starting out. With wingfoiling, and windfoiling for that matter, you don't have to worry about the wing or sail as you are getting setup on the board. I also think the kitefoiling background helped prepare me big time for wingfoiling and windfoiling and as a result they came more easily. When you fall in winging, all the drama stops, when you fall in kitefoiling, it's sometimes only just starting.
