There's no need for razor sharp foils or points on tips. Lightweight carbon foils can hit you and bounce off.
There's always a risk that something might hurt you, but that's true of everything. Think about what would happen if you fell and got your leg stuck through the frame while a wave pulls the board at an odd angle.
