Wingfoilboard mast track positions

Postby Peter_Frank » Sun May 16, 2021 4:31 pm

Hi

Different boards, different positions.

Different foils, different positions too, if you ride with a supersmall stab, you will have the mast further forward, and if a big stab, it should be further rear.

Apart from different wings and relative aoa and mast position on fuselage.

Bottom line is, we all need different mast positions in the board, so in order to share, it might be helpful when purchasing a new board for your foil.

I dont use straps, of course their position can change everything - but also without straps, you want a default "perfect" trim, so you can start without the board dragging too much at the tail, sinking, and without standing so far forward that it feels wrong, like the board is too long.
You all know what I mean.

Yes, when having a beveled/tapered tail it also change things, but would still give a good indication about the position.
The shorter the board, the more important it is.

My two current boards, distance from tail to track, track length, and overall board length:

85 litre Takoon Comet SW 4'10: 22 cm to 25 cm mast track, length 147 cm.
90 litre Takoon Comet 5'4: 29.5 cm to 25 cm mast track, lenght 163 cm.

How does yours measure up in terms of track position?

Hi Peter,
Why you have to move mast forward when you use smaller rear wing ? Center of lift of a front wing never change and this is what is a main factor for your stance.
Bigger stab make more pitch stable but I don't think move center of lift forward.

You do need to move it, if you change stab.

COL (balance point) moves a lot, depending on stab size.

Try removing your stab fully, and you will stand maybe 10 to 20 cm further aft for balance.

Especially with these bigger wings, it is even more pronounced than when we kitefoil and change stabs

When you undersize the rear stab, you have to correct the balance of the foil, by moving your rear foot back.

So that means, you move the foil forward in the tracks, to allow you to stand in the same spot on the board.

Same applies to a shorter fuselage, because the leverage powering the front wing is reduced.

Another affect on ride with these changes (rear foot position change in relation to the mast), affects the feel of the entire foil. At the extreme, foiled tuned for rear foot behind the mast, versus tuned for rear foot in front of the mast, rear foot behind, makes the foil less tracky, more lost, more of a riding a pogo stick feel. Where rear foot in front of the mast, tracks predictably and has a more predictable balance.

Exactly Dwight.

You can move the balancepoint of your foil hugely, using different sizes of stabs, different angles, different fuselages.

Thus the mast track position is extremely relevant depending on whether you are to the "loose" small stab or no stab, or the tracking bigger stab with more front foot pressure, in short.

But apparently no interest in sharing the position???
Takes only 10 seconds to measure with a ruler, from the back of the board :D

Ok, you twisted my arm. 10” to center of track on my straight tail. 12” to center of tracks on my bevel tail. The boards volume distribution and tail design affect this so much, it’s not relevant to other brands.

I don't know if weight is relevant, but I run an AXIS mast in Naish and Fanatic boards in the forward most position and have used five different front wings and five different rears. I have never moved the mast, so I assume my foot position must be compensating.

This was actually my point, that I think the tracks are "off" on some boards, to one or the other side, thus the distance/track length/board length on different boards, is interesting.

I also run with my foils very forward, or all the way forward in the tracks, but I know I use supersmall stabs, so it could explain.

Chinook is now offering 16” long tracks to shapers. I declined. Adds weight.

I think I need an extra 3 to 4 inches forward of the current fanatic box just so I could use the straps.
