Cold Water Winging

Postby scottnorby » Wed May 26, 2021 10:13 pm

The west coast USA has a lot of wind in areas where the water is cold
San Diego, on the other hand, has an average year round windspeed of 6mph
So it seems that most of the west coast winging will be in colder water

Wave quality is not as crucial
And more wind is all we need
So it seems that the core of the winging will be north of point Conception?

How many guys are winging in nor cal and central cal now?
In the waves?
Mostly converts from kite or just brand new riders?

Vancouver Island! Cold water, cold wind, and lots of blown out surf. Wing paradise in a 5mm wetsuit with hood, boots, and gloves.

Really though, it's maybe a break from the cold ... surf foiling has put me back in the water, after years out of it with longboarding, sup, sup foil, and kiting. But now with winging, I am out of the water enough that I've discovered it's doable with a 4mm, no hood, no booties or gloves. But that's on a sunny spring day. :cool2:

Anyways, back to your point: San Fran is probably the west coast epicenter for cold water winging, with good wind and waves to play in, plus a dangerous kite launch. The Gorge will be bigger in summer, but it's not cold, least as far as I've read.

Yeah I suspect the gorge will see a big movement over the next 5 years
I watched it happen with kite from 2001 on

Winging is the best of all the disciplines simply because of the extreme amount of freedom...even to surf tiny wind waves

yeah, as an obsessive surf foiler, it's like tow in assisted without a jetski
I have seen video of the gorge and heard descriptions....head high rolling swells upstream, stacked up, sounds like wing paradise!

Peter.....to clarify....the water north of California's point conception is considerably cooler than the south

Water temps up in Oregon and Washington ocean stay between 50 and 60 degrees but usually around 52

The lakes and Columbia River do warm up in the summer and fall.....but still stay cool compared to Florida, Hawaii, or Texas
Even the ocean temps of the west side of Baja stay pretty cool year round
