Hooked !

Postby Robsw6 » Mon Aug 16, 2021 12:47 pm

The first 30 mins were dreadful, then it clicked into place & did 2hrs of 1 to 2 1/2 km runs - no gybes yet, but love it....

Nothing I have read/watched explained that to flip the wing over, when it lands the wrong way, the best technique is to do this sitting on the board.... please say if there's a better technique???

I have a Takuma WR3 and ended up losing skin from my knuckles rubbing on the centre strut - is there something I am missing here regarding holding positions, or maybe its just the wing?

I can pump the wing to keep going through lulls, but haven't tried pumping the wing yet.

All in all, its v addictive & never thought I'd say it, but I prefer it to kite-foiling :o

Pulling the leash downwards helps prevent the wing from flipping. I found that the waist leash helped reduce the amount of flipping because the leash pulls the wing down. Once the wing has flipped there is generally an easier (usually towards the nose of the board) and a harder direction to flip it. If you are having difficulty in one direction try the other and it will probably flip easily.

I sold my kites after a season of winging. Its so much fun.

Yes, it is called a boom. :D

But we already have straps vs strapless, LEI vs foil kites, hooked vs unhooked, etc. to contend with on the other forums so probably best not to get into a Duotone vs the rest (ie: boom vs handles) debate on the wingsurfing forum.

Most of my flips happen when I drag the wing tip, flip the wing and then crash.

When I go to right the wing, I make sure the wing is pointing mostly into the wind, swim to the wing tip and flip it over. I then swim back to the centre handhold and jump back on the board.

Like in windsurfing, flipping the wing involves letting the wind do most of the work. That means reaching further towards a wingtip, increasing the leverage that the wind has on the wing and not really trying to muscle it through. And of course when it's flipped the right way, ensure that it stays that way! So do not let the wing dangle at the end of the leash, specially if it's prone to do funny flippity things when left to its own free will (ex: Duotone Echos). Instead, hold onto the LE handle and push it down onto the water while you get on your board / on your knees.
