Which wing size makes sense?

Postby newnewnewbie » Thu Nov 25, 2021 10:35 am

Hello surfers,

right now I have no experience in Kiting and Winging.
I have stood on a classic surfboard about 25 years ago.

No that I am older but not wiser, I want to try wingsurfing.

For a first attempt (and because of the time of the year) I'd like to start with a mountainboard on the beach, and develop myself over a SUP to a foil-board.

As finding a suitable mountainboard is not very hard (or at least, it doesn't seem difficult, as fittings and stuff is changeable by increasing skill.
What I cannot fit in is the information which wing-size might be good for me.

Would be fine if I could use the same wing for at least the mountainboard and SUP.

Right now I have found some stores who sell these sets, but I always have to choose the wingsize, where my stroy ends...

So might you have any tips regarding the size? Or even have a complete set in mind which fits my needs?

Thanks in advance

I wing on a non-mountanboard skateboard when it is cold and think the 4 meters is a good skateboard size.

5m is a good base size for most people, on the water and for mountainboard. Not too bulky, so won't scrape the tips on the ground too much. Works well from 15kts onwards. Pretty much same range as when using it on the foil.

It also depends on your weight ( < 70 kg 4m, > 70 kg 5 m)

Do Dryland with shoes on to start.

I use Mountainboard, Hurricaneboard ( 2 wheels) but I find Inline skates the easiest to learn on.

Do you have wind? Do you know how much?

Hi

Assume you have "all kinds" of wind, and can choose the day where it is okay, meaning not too much for mountainboard, and sufficient on the water.

Weight is not that important, if you can choose the wind days yourself, but size is.

A 4 m2 would be the best choice on asphalt or mountainboard, and a 5 m2 for wingfoil.

So 4½ to 5 m2 would be the best size if you are average weight and lots of wind.
5 to 5½ m2 if you are heavier and have less wind quite often.

If you only want one for starters.

No matter what, something around the 5 m2 is the best to start with :thumb:

Allright, thanks a lot for all your answers. Then I'll get a 5m2 one. That will be fun as hell :-D
