Light wind winging

Postby mr_daruman » Mon Apr 11, 2022 2:46 pm

Whats your setup for light winds?
Using 60cm mast, 5.5m2/2400(mid/low aspect) on a 5' 80L(5kg).
Gets me to ride around 5 to 9knots variable wind.
For the wing...Anything above 5.5m2 I feel I am getting diminishing return for power/weight/form ratio in winds lighter than 10 knots (at 65kg, 5'11/175cm). Rather I go for either big mid/low aspect foil 2000+ or high aspect 1500~1600. Short mast and light <short> board keeps the weight down, which makes a huge difference once your under 8 knots.

At 80kg, my lightwind setup has been a 90L board + 1290 sqcm high aspect foil (Lift 200HA/38) + 7m F-One CWC wing. This gets me going down to 10-12 knots - which is as low as I care to wing anyways.

I recently got a 1440 sqcm high aspect foil (Kujira), which should replace the 1290 for light wind.

I am the opposite of you in that I prefer a larger wing with smaller foil. Before the CWC I didn't like wings above 5.5 m either, but these wings changed that for me. The 7m CWC is not particularly light on the scale (2730 g), but it flys really light in maneuvers, luffs well, and has a massive wind range (low 20s is totally manageable). Much less effort to get going vs a 5.5, but feels like a 5.5 when on foil.

Ocean Rodeo Aluula 6m and Gofoil GL240 (1875cm2) with the biggest tail I have, looking forward to trying out the new 20". I ride a 32" mast and 90L board in everything. I have a 110L sup foil that I bring out sometimes, easy to stand on in flat water.

Same as Stella, 10-12kt is about the minimum I try for. Any lighter, the work isn't worth the reward for me. Though I have a DIY FoilDrive that I am going to experiment with in light wind, see if it makes it fun, get up easy then apparent wind from there. My guess is short term novelty factor only.

Duotone 6m. Echo in the video but I’ve since upgraded to a 6m Slick
Gong Veloce XXL (1800+ sq cm/Veloce 47cm stab), 82cm SAB mast
5’/90 liter FoilSurfMachine board (I currently ride a 4’9”/75 liter FSM board)
I’m about 77 kg and a spazzy 63 yrs old🤣

No idea what the winds were in this video but it’s as low as I’d care to go and still be able to have fun tacking both ways and pull off some 360’s. It’s almost like I could practically loose all forward momentum and still stay up on foil during heel-to-toe tacks on that big ole XXL foil. I need to make flat turns in order change direction quickly enough for upwind transitions with such a wide foil (107cm)
