Wing sizing in a two wing quiver

Postby Foxi » Mon May 09, 2022 6:35 pm

Hi all,
I wonder who of you get along with 2 wings, weighing in at around 80kgs. I'd like to cover 10-25 kts on a 90l board with Sabfoil 999/745. I have mainly two homespots, both fresh water, first having thermal gusty winds between zero und 20kts, the second being quite steady 12-16 kts or 18-25 kts.

thanks !!

I don't know your foils, but putting that aside my suggestion is
7m FOne CWC
4.5m Takoon, Strike, Swing, Mantis, Slingwing v3, etc...
Crossover will be around ~17-19 kts

Im your same weight and have a 90L as well. My previous quiver was a 6/4, but I was using it in slightly more wind than your range. Im now on 7/5/3.5

If you are topping out at 25, I don't think you need a 4. The 7m CWC has a massive wind range and while it will still be work, you can get it to go in 10kts where a 6m is going to be a struggle. I enjoy the 7m CWC a lot more than any 6m Ive tried.

I tried to do 4/6 but didn't like it! (I now have just ended up with 3, 4, 5, 6!). In any case if I were to do 2 wings, I would drop the smallest one, and choose something like Wasp v3 or FOne Strike that have 0.6m or 0.7m spacing so the difference isn't so extreme. E.g. you could have a 4m + 5.5m or 3.5m + 5m.

Depends on your local winds. Get a 4/6 if you don't like riding in low winds or if you don't have low winds very often. If you live somewhere with garbage wind like I do, I'd go with the 7/4.5 suggestion made earlier in the thread. I ride a 4/6 combo, but also windfoil when it's lighter as it's way more efficient than winging in light wind.

The problem with your wind range of 10-25kts is that this forces you to have a 7m or a good grunty 6, which will become overkill at 13kts. And you will keep riding that till 18kts before you downsize. That's a lot of wing to deal with, when there's definitely more fun to be had using a smaller size whenever possible. Same thing for kiting, every knot at the bottom of the wind range comes at a big cost. (bigger, slower, not as maneuverable, also more expensive)

If you were to reduce your expectations and consider 12-25kts instead, then a 5.5m - 4m combo would work well. Or 6m-4.5m if you prefer to favor the lower end than the top end. I've done the 6/4 combo, it definitely works, but I thought that there was a bit of a gap and I was often missing out on the magic size, the 5, which covers most of my conditions in its sweet spot. So now the 6 isn't used that much, and really it should become a 7 to maximize range. But I also kitefoil, so if possible to do so, I'd go for the kitefoil option in sub 12kts instead of 6 or 7m wing.

thanks all for sharing your personal experiences !!
The spots I do have for wing foiling do not allow for kitefoiling, otherwise it would have been a snap to start from 12 kts only. I've spent so much time of my life waiting for wind and live in such a nice alpine area, that I go mtb or roadbiking if conditions aren't promising. Wing foiling reopens spots from
early windsurfing days for me. I will rent wings fo find the core size for me as I'm afraid to miss exactly this golden middle if stretching the windscope too much for a 2 size quiver. My intended brand only provides for 0.5 increments so that I guess a 1.5m step should be ok, at least in the upper/medium sizes. I'm a bit concerned reading 6m to become a handfull from 13kts as those 11/12 till 14/15 kts are what I need one wing in its sweet spot.

Don't get me wrong, a 6 is still perfectly fine in 14kts, it's just that a 5 works well then and is nicer in many aspects. That's what I meant by overkill. 1.5m down to a 4.5m will prevent you from pushing your 6 to the high teens.

actually think that the 4 and 5 is a good spread. 5m should get you going 12 knots with good technique. Ride it into 18-20 knots. Can start riding the 4m in about 16 knots and can take that thing into the 25knot territory safely.

>5m is like taking out a light wind specific kite. They are fun to ride in super light conditions but they are a dog slow to ride and once the wind picks up you want to run in to swap.
