Wing Foiling setup for lighter riders?

Postby martrench » Tue May 31, 2022 5:04 am

For younger/lighter riders, I'm guessing the wing size and front wing area should be smaller right?

My daughter is interested in Wing Foiling and is only 52kg (115 lbs).

She rode the setup below with a 60cm mast and foot hook removed yesterday:

4'10 Blue Planet Wing Master (89L)

Axis PNG 1150 (1778 cm2) and 400 Rear

The board size seemed good and she was able to get up on foil after a few downwind runs.

Can lighter riders use larger foils and just use a smaller wing in decent wind? Or do I need to purchase a smaller front wing for her?

Thanks!

looks like an ultimate chance to buy a second set without discussions... 8) so much fun to be together on the water. It's priceless. :D
And yes get another set, smaller front and rear wing, you can use to and mast 85cm unless you have shallow waters. 60/70 L board.
It's surpricing how fast youngsters will learn, first time my son tried winging with my setup (70L with Gong Fluid XLT foil) he was riding both ways on foil (same happend with kitefoiling with him) we weigh the same. 70kg.

Thanks! So lighter riders need smaller area foils.

I have an Axis BSC 810 (1070 cm2) front wing I use for kiting. I'll let my daughter try it out next time winging.

I would let her ride and get more experience and confidence on the slow easy big wing first.

And then the 810 later.

In kitefoil, WAY too big wings can be more difficult and risky as a lot more unstable and the kite can yank a lot more uncontrolled so you fly out of the water.

For wingfoil, a bigger wing is easier when learning, and you dont have the same power yanks.

As soon as learned okay, she should take the smaller wing, as it will feel a lot better with more speed and less drag.

8) Peter

A long time kite foiler was fortunate enough to have his wife get hooked on winging while he did. He used to show up by himself most of the time. But now she is always with him, and the first one out on the water.

He complained to me as well that she is progressing faster than him, and better than him. Even though he has years of kite foiling experience.

They ride the same gear but she is lighter. That is one thing that is helping her progress faster. Everything is easier because of her lighter weight, gear for gear.

I also learned on big gear, slowly, and slowly progressed smaller and smaller. It pays big dividends - don't be afraid to ride big, easy, slow gear!
