GWA WINGFOIL WORLD TOUR 2022

ROUND TWO: Ensis Engadinwing by Dakine GWA Wingfoil World Cup

WRAP-UP - Day One

We’re back for the second GWA Wingfoil World Tour event of the year and this week sees us in the iconic Swiss Alps for the Ensis Engadinwing by Dakine GWA Wingfoil World Cup.

Surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of Silvaplana and St Moritz this is an event that everyone is very eager to participate in both the Surf-Freestyle and Surf-Slalom disciplines that will run this week.

Day one was jam-packed with action as we were able to complete the women's Surf-Freestyle event. You can find out how the event unfolded and what the men got up to below!

REGISTRATION

Tuesday morning began with 51 men and 11 women attending Riders Registration whilst we patiently waited for the thermal to kick in.

As of 10.30am the wind came so it was full steam ahead to get the Women’s Surf-Freestyle rounds underway and on the water with 10-11 hours worth of Surf-Freestyle to get through at this event across the men’s and women’s competitions.

WOMEN'S SURF-FREESTYLE

PAULA NOVOTNA (CZE) V NIA SUARDIAZ (ESP)
Czech rider Paula Novotna put on a sublime performance from start to finish during day one of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup. Landing big tricks earned high scores from the judges in each of her heats and this is a well-deserved first title win for Paula who came off the water after battling it out in the final against Leucate winner Nia Suardiaz. Suardiaz came up just short in the final with a heat score of 19, narrowly losing out to Paula’s 21.8 in what was a thrilling encounter.

MEN'S SURF-FREESTYLE:

The action continued directly after the women's competition. The wind was blowing and with no sign of stopping the event, the crew put their foot on the gas and got underway.

It’s still early stages with plenty of rounds to take place but Balz Mȕller pulled off the highest trick of the day in his opening heat. He scored a whopping 8.67 with the famous Radiculo 720!

The men’s action was called to a halt once the thermal wind subsided in late afternoon however the crew was able to finish round 3 heats so we'll be starting from Round 4 later on in the week.

FINAL RESULTS:

WOMEN'S SURF-FREESTYLE:

Paula Novotna (CZE)
Nia Suardiaz (ESP)
Flora Artzner (FRA)
Maaike Huvermann (NLD)

WEDNESDAY 15th JUNE SCHEDULE:

As the women’s Surf-Freestyle is now complete and the men are up to Round 4 tomorrow’s forecast looks great. We are heading down to St Moritz for a full day of Surf-Slalom competition for all athletes with the skippers meeting commencing at 10.30am with a first possible start at 11.15am.

Ensis Engadinwing by Dakine GWA Wingfoil World Cup
WRAP-UP - Day Two

Wednesday's focus was on the Surf-Slalom heats. Crew and athletes headed down to St Moritz where the skippers' meeting took place at 10.30am. Although the early hours of the morning presented a cloudy atmosphere and the forecast was showing heavy rain, the beauty of the Swiss alps provided conditions to run the first heat which commenced at 13.45.

MEN'S SURF-SLALOM

Heats got underway from 13.45 and with 40 men in the draw, the first four elimination rounds would see the top five go through to the Semi-Finals with the top five from each Semi-Final making it to the finale.

Camille Bouyer continued the impressive form that earned him runner-up in Leucate and he didn’t put a foot wrong during elimination one here in Switzerland. We managed to run-up to the Men’s elimination two progressing all the way to the final before the wind disappeared. Francesco Cappuzzo was looking solid in all heats keeping his hair dry and not putting a foot wrong.

As it stands Camille Bouyer (FRA) is in the lead closely followed by Francesco Cappuzzo (ITA) and Alessandro Tomasi (ITA) in third.

WOMEN'S SURF-SLALOM

After Tuesday’s battle in Surf-Freestyle on Wednesday the women were eager to get racing down in St Moritz. Elimination one was a tough stint for the athletes with the wind not wanting to play ball. It had been up and down all day and challenged the fleet to bring out their best skills. Wings were pumping, legs were burning and we saw swimming skills to cross the line.

Adapting to the scenario and taking the win was Nia Suardiaz (ESP) in first, Orane Ceris (FRA) in second, and Kylie Belloeuvre (FRA).

Elimination two and three proved further battles for all. Elimination two saw five out of the nine ladies not finishing the race. Flora Artzner (FRA) took her first race win of the day with Maaike Huvermann (NLD) and Orane Ceris (FRA) following closely behind.

Elimination three was a similar outcome with conditions really throwing curve balls. In the end, the overall result after three elimination rounds was Maaike Huvermann (NLD) first, Orane Ceris (FRA) second and Nia Suardiaz (ESP) coming in the third position.

DAY 2 HIGHLIGHT VIDEO

Check out all the action from Day two in the highlight video! Here you'll watch all the key moments that went down in St. Moritz from both the men's and women's Surf-Slalom racing heats.

We still have a lot of elimination rounds to get through but after yesterday's antics, we're excited to continue the remainder of Surf-Slalom at Silvaplana throughout the remainder of the week.

Day Three

It was back to Silvaplana for day three of the Ensis Engadinwing by Dakine GWA Wingfoil World Cup. After a successful day of competition in Surf-Slalom on Wednesday, the crew were keen to power through the remaining heats of the Men’s Surf-Freestyle on Thursday.

After patiently waiting throughout the day it was decided by our race director at 17.30 that the competition wouldn’t take place due to a lack of wind all day.

However, there was still action on display from the athletes with the majority of them perfecting their pump foiling. With that being said our crew thought it was the perfect opportunity to speak to local hero, Balz Mȕller (CHE), and get his take on why he enjoys pump foiling so much!

DAY 3 HIGHLIGHT VIDEO
Check out all the action from Day three in the highlight video! Here you'll find Jo Ciastula speaking to our sponsor representatives and getting amongst the athletes who spent their afternoon pump foiling in the beautiful lake of Silvaplana

Day Four

DAY 4 HIGHLIGHT VIDEO

Check out all the action from Day four in the highlight video below! Yesterday we saw the first pump foil competition go down here on lake Silvaplana with 25 riders giving it their all on a windless day.

RIDERS START THEIR DAY WITH SOME COMPETITIVE PUMP FOIL ACTION

With prize money up for grabs and the idea of being claimed the first-ever pump foil champion, these riders were determined to succeed and bring it home.

Round 1 saw everyone pump out to the designated bouy, complete the turn, and burn it back across the finish line. Athletes were given 3 start attempts but once up on the foil, that was the run that counted!

As the final commenced the course was altered. Judges wanted to see more variety so implemented a figure of eight turn which sure did burn the legs! As clock times were getting quicker and quicker the local boys of Balz Mȕller (CHE) and Maxime Chabloz (CHE) were pilling on the pressure to the remaining competition. Titouan Galea (FRA) wasn’t phased one ounce. Embracing the competition he took it against the Swiss boys!

After a well-contested battle, it was non-other than Balz Mȕller who took the win!

MEN’S PRONE-FOIL RESULTS

Balz Mȕller (CHE): 26.48
Titouan Galea (FRA): 26.59
Maxime Chabloz (CHE): 26.64

Day Five

DAY 5 HIGHLIGHT VIDEO

Check out all the action from Day five in the highlight video below! Yesterday we saw the completion of the Men's Surf-Freestyle which gave awesome action from start to finish. The day got wrapped up with some Surf-Slalom heats before the wind died.

UP’S AND DOWNS THROUGHOUT THE MEN’S SURF FREESTYLE BRING FRESH FACES TO THE PODIUM

A surprise exit from Francesco Cappuzzo (ITA) saw Steffan Speissberger (AUT) have a flying start. As round five came upon us the level of skill being shown was only rising. We saw another surprise knockout when Balz Mȕller (CHE) came up short against Gollito Estredo (VEN) (sweet revenge for the Venezuelan’s loss in the final in Leucate!) which really opened up the playing field.

Chris Macdonald (USA) was going massive in all heats proving to the judges why he deserved his spot in the final. Trick after trick his height only increased, taking trips to the moon allowed the youngster to deliver mind-blowing rotations. At still just 16 years of age the big stage didn’t phase this youthful talent. His final against Stephan Speissberger was one not to be missed. Both riders put on an incredible performance with Macdonald scoring 32.93 to Speissberger’s 25.17.

Titouan Galea (NCL) faced Gollito Estredo (VEN) for a third-place battle where the New Caledonian put in one of the performances of the day. Scoring a whopping 33.06, this was the highest collective score on day five.

Men’s Surf-Freestyle

1. Chris Macdonald (USA)
2. Stephan Speissberger (AUT)
3. Titouan Galea (FRA)

WIND HOLDS TO RUN SURF-SLALOM ON DAY FIVE

With the thermic winds still pumping at 18.00 we transitioned from Surf-Freestyle to Surf-Slalom. Starting off with the women, both elimination rounds were won by Flora Artzner (FRA) who had a solid day of racing showing quick speed and great pumping.

The men were also able to fire through a handful of heats but, gradually as we entered the early evening the wind was dying and it was time to wrap the competition up for Saturday.

Current standings are as follows;

Mens Surf-Slalom

1. Francesco Cappuzzo (ITA)
2. Bastien Escofet (FRA)
3. Alessandro Tomasi (ITA)

Womens Surf-Slalom

1. Flora Artzner (FRA)
2. Nia Suardiaz (ESP)
3. Orane Ceris (FRA)
