Im almost 60...
Last plane trip kite/wing foiling I had to choose between diclofenac pills ou hierying a carrier...chose the latter.
Now I told myself I can only choose one.
I also "surf" kitewave style, the closest to surf I imagime.
Winging mainly cought my interest for "swell riding" specially in ocean swells, as shallow water makes me wory about hitting the bottom with my "expensive" gear.
Nothing I saw in winging could be called surfing...its swell riding...but hey...the surfing community embraced it...maybe that is why its also a media and comercial success. Its a powerfull community.
As for the Van, agreed, they shoud advertise in the wingfoiling magazine, maybe an eletric van, because gas prices will cost me a new wing every 2 or 3 round trips to a decent spot.

The more I watch the less interest I have. Access to shitty launches is the only advantage I can see, everything is better and more dynamic with a kite. Also flying a kite is part of the magic, holding a wing in my face is just not appealing to me. :o :o
Agreed kiting is more dynamic for jumping and powered moves in waves. But where it isn't better is pure surfing: because no matter how well your kite drifts, you are not 100% depowered and relying 100% on wave energy. That's the #1 benefit IMHO.

But a secondary consideration, for all kinds of foiling, whether kite, wing, or sup, is it just generally looks lame ... but is so much more fun than it looks. It is often shocking to see photos or videos of sessions, and compare how it felt doing it to what it looks like. I am not sure why exactly, but I figure it triggers some kind of endorphin rush, where your mind is tricked into thinking it's in more danger than it is. There is also an aesthetically pleasing feeling to cutting through chop without board chatter, and when you point downwind it's silent and half-weightless, like powder snowboarding. But hey, sometimes loud heavy metal is good too, a little country, a little rock n roll, we all get our kicks. :thumb:

Snip...
My hydrofoiling equipment will last years, 1 kite, 1 board, 2 foils...
Wingsurfing: lessons, several boards, several wings, at least 2 foils, etc, etc.
Industry must LOVE a new and evolving equipment sport, where individual evolution also requieres frequently changing gear...
So, instead of 1 kite, now I need 2 or 3 wings...
Nothing beats kite hydrofoiling for travelling...
If you live very close to a wingsurfing spot...ok...if not and almost always have to travel...not so much, if you dont go by car...even less so.

Hmmm, this is SO not true....

A wingfoil has a lot more range than a kitefoil, period.

So I have no idea why you write you need several wings, several boards etc???

Even when experienced, you only need one foil, one board - and the number of wings depends on how many you need.

But the RANGE is crazy big with wings, lowend quite fixed, but upper end crazy high, and almost no risk, compared to kitefoil or kitesurf.

yeah it's scary when a newbie asks for true costing of the entire quiver. Like the frog in the pot of cool water put on to boil, you don't notice it so much when you add a piece at a time.

My advice to them is you can do it relatively simple and cheap if you want to. EG a kiter can get by with a 10m kite and a surfboard, good for 15-25kt range, which might account for 75% of decent days around here. A winger can do the same with a 5m wing and a mid size foil. The problem comes when you start chasing the extreme of light or high winds, or bigger or smaller waves, or jumps or more speed, then you get into specialized gear. It explodes from there.

As you've mentioned, it's traveling that forces the issue ... you can't bring it all with you, so you have to prioritize and decide. That will mean some days you won't have the right gear and can't get on the water, but hopefully the trade off is you are in cool places away from home and there are other things to see and do to make up for it.

So we now almost agree wingfoil is not for frequent flyer or Bus rider, but can be done...
A pocket board, a kite, maybe 2 foils, one mast is unbeatable.
The power strike of 1 kite replaces 2 wings, as most of both sports relies on just start going... and its done.

I have no idea why you would need several masts and fuselages and foil wings?

Even experienced good riders most often don't have that....

Yes you need two foil wings as a bit bigger for winging, and higher AR.

And two boards yes, but otherwise one can use the same mast and fuselage and stab.

This reads more like a rant than a discussion starter. Kite foiling is fun, wingfoiling is fun and growing faster than whatever hype you think might be driving it. Nobody is waiting for you to make up your mind… nobody is twisting your arm. ✌🏼 do what makes you happy, but take your raincloud with you….

Unless you actively get hindered by it, who cares?
As long as they keep selling and developing better kite(foil) gear I don't really care what they do with their marketing money.
And honestly, it just makes business sense to put advertising money in a new market since marketshare is probably easier to gain there compared to a more settled market like kiting.
The lower barier for entry to learn winging and lower risk makes it just a way bigger potential market then kiting and doubly so for kitefoiling.
Not surprised kite companies want to make sure they have a stake in the wing market.

Regarding amount of gear:
Anyone who kitefoils went at least to a phase with twintip gear so I would argue kitefoiling is a LOT more gear intensive.
Especially since twintip kites are usually not great hydrofoil kites so you probably have gone through quite a few kites to get to your "one kite quiver".
I would also argue that a one kite quiver isn't really the standard for kite foiling.
Most people I know would switch kites at least once between 8 and 20 knots and some would multiple times....
Not saying you cannot ride a single kite between 8 and 20 knots with enough skill, just that people prefer to not do so.
