Rodeo Start - sinker Board 34L, rider 92kg

Hi Guys,

Rodeo Start in my opinion is the easiest way to get up on a sinker board. Even in moderate wind conditions. In this vid something about 15/16 kts in a gusts and 10/11 in the lulls. Gear - Board: Armstrong Wig Surf 4'5, 34L, F One Strike 5,0m and Armstrong Foil HS1550v2.

I find the modified stinkbug much easier on the knees. For me this type of start just tortures the knees. Going from sitting to your knees is just too painful.

But this may work great for some!

The stinkbug method worked for me immediately. This method looks easier but it didnt click for me yet. I have the feeling I need more wind compared to the stinkbug method. I will keep trying though. In any case sitting is the most stable position so if it will work for me it could be the best method. Thanks for video's, great tutorial!

The rodeo/cowboy start is my go to. I learned it when I started riding boards 30-45L, but still do it now that I am back to riding more neutral sizes (e.g. 70L). It's just the fastest, most controlled way for me to get going.

Cezary has the video below that shows the footwork required to get to your knees. I have had no luck doing that. My legs are pretty long and getting my feet up on the board behind me is a bit of a stretch. I'll try it some more and see if things improve.

I have mastered a couple of variants of the stink bug start and that is now my standard way of starting. It's a lot faster than the conventional knee start.

Unfortunately, the guy who recorded this video cuted the recording to short the vids and started immediately again, and this is the missing part. This is why I recorded this another vid to show it better how it works.



As soon as I have a wing mount for gopro I will record this again.

It may really bring a lot of fun to ride a sinker, cause I ride a 20l plus and 0 problems even in light winds, and I doesn't have any problems riding it till 30 knots either.

Actually a lot better question than what you might think.

I have had boards a tad below my weight, and very short.

No good IMO, unless in perfect winds - but how often do you get this?

Riding +5 litres now, works for everything (for me).

But I am not a hardcore freestyler doing loops and stuff - so is this the reason why so many (in this forum) go for ultra small sinkers?

As the swing weight is of course present, but IMO more a mental thing.
But I agree, the mental thing can be CRAZY dominant, so I get that....

Or is it because you ride in big breaking waves, and an advantage to "fight" these conditions?

Curious now...

Here, a few of the top freestylers ride small boards, but they regret when the wind drops or gets fickle - so for these it is a matter of freestyle jumping, but only as long as there is lots of wind.
