Sometimes the reward comes easy. Sometimes the riches are hard earned. Sometimes one needs to cut and run as no reward will ever come your way! Kiting at St. Anthony Dunes in SE Idaho is one of those maddening places where (unless you lived there) scoring a session comes after years of driving and hit or miss waiting for wind. It just does not deliver the goods reliably.
At the end of a week of superb snow kite road tipping around the Rockies I found myself making the familiar drive out to the SA Dunes. Luckily, the stars were aligned this time. The snow was smooth and the winds were springtime fresh. Luckily I was able to spend half a day kiting this surreal landscape of perfect wind lips and endless bowls.
It is a magical place and one I would never recommend as a kite spot: it’s just not reliable. However, if you obsess about kiting dunes, it is my favorite!
Thanks for looking and see ya out there,
Noah
