Saratoga Springs snowkite fly in Feb 18-19

Postby snowspider » Mon Jan 23, 2012 5:20 am

Getting the word out that there will be an informal gathering of snowkiters in Saratoga Springs NY Feb 18-19. Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau is in contact with the Polo association to see if we can use that site in addition to the main site on the north end of Saratoga lake. Also a state boat launch at Great Sacandaga is 24 miles away, should be enough choices to pull off a good time. The city has an event going on that weekend called "Dance Flurry" and hotel rooms apparently get scarce
so book early if staying overnight. See Discoversaratoga.org for more info and I'll post more details as they become available.

We now have permission to park at Lee's Trailer Park on route 9P just south of the bridge that crosses the Saratoga Lake outlet. The owner Mary will keep it plowed out and is charging $5 to park , please fill this space first. There is also limited parking at the boat launch and if needed we can use the Saratoga Rowing Association property on the north side of the bridge (park on the sides and back).
Saratoga City Tavern in the middle of downtown has plenty of room to get us together on their main floor if we get there before 7pm. If needed they also rent an upper floor area for $50/hour. My guess is if enough people show up they would allow us to move to any open space for free.
Sometime this winter it's going to snow , hopefully it will be the weekend of Feb. 18.
It also looks like there is enough going on in and arround the city for non-kiters to have fun too.
Weather willing it should be fun place to kite.

How is the ice thickness? Lake george is a little thin( meaning none) right now with actually no ice on the main lake.

Almost everywhere across the middle parts of NY state there is 5-7" on bays and small lakes , bigger lakes have open water. Great Sacondaga last w/e had 4wheelers and snowmobiles on it. Basicly we have spring conditions now , 3days of cold will make everything thats there now really good 3days of warm and we are all done . Ice fishing reports dated 1-13-12 had Saratoga with 8" , Round lake 1-30-12 6-7" , both probably thinner now and all lakes have wet edges due to the snow melt. Things could change big time by Feb 18 , I'm hoping for snow but cleaning the bearings on the beach buggy just in case.

Looks like conditions will be smooth ice. Skis , skates , buggies with blades will do very well. Sharp edges will be a must (I have an edge tool to share). I'm bringing 2 buggies on blades, 2 snowspider sleds, 1 Cockroach (skateboard with a seat and blades) and misc skis , skates , boots. Fast flying if the wins come thru as forecast.
Park at Lee's Trailer Park at the north end of the lake on Rt.9P. Additional parking across the bridge at the Rowing Assoc. Please don't park in front of their building.
Saratoga City Tavern 21 Caroline St. has enough room to keep us together if we get there before 7pm.
Check Discoversaratoga.org for activities arround town. There is a big dance festival going on , plenty of opportunity to shake your booty.
