I took advantage of a gusty day yesterday to see if a wing feels safer than a kite. It does. First day putting miles in:
How do you think the wingtips will hold up if kiting over frozen/crusty/icy surfaces?

Anyone know if there's enough snow for kiting Snow Mesa, above Spring Creek Pass, south of Lake city, as of late Feb? Closest SNOTEL site shows about 40"-45" of snow, but I've never kited there and don't know if that's enough. TIA

That's a good question. The tips have a pretty beefy material on them, and as you may know, you really want to keep the tips off the surface (otherwise it drives downward and you probably need to let go anyway). With strong wind, that's easier to do.
I just noticed some wear on the sail material near the leading edge during my last session. I think that's from when you release it and it lands upside down (?). I think I'm more concerned about that, but time will tell.

House is now livable and just need to finish the north side siding, will get back to it in a couple of months when warmer.
Been riding a lot, mostly MM n LH. Still staying away from the sketchy backcountry conditions.
Lot of good SW wind coming up in the next days!
Picture from my last MM ride a few days ago, on 6m, 30 miles track:

Hi Galewarning
"Anyone know if there's enough snow for kiting Snow Mesa, above Spring Creek Pass,"
Link to the CDOT roadcam:
https://www.cotrip.org/map.htm#/default ... raId=10862
I haven't been there this season, fine riding at home lately. Heard it is good though, see ScottN's post of Dec.15 in this thread. We can usually ride there by December, but often no snomobile access that early.
Remember that there is Jarosa Mesa to the west, accessed from the same trail head. If the snow on Snow Mesa is wind hammered, the snow on Jarosa will be better. It has vast terrain to explore, but not the 13,000' summits like Snow Mesa.

Hey, so thinking ahead a little bit - I'm planning a trip to Snow Mesa the weekend of 27 March, if anyone wants to join. Always a gamble setting dates in advance, but that time of year tends to be really good, and I've never been skunked there.
I can't really plan/coordinate anything beyond saying I'll be there, but would be fun to get a couple folks together. For those who haven't been - access does require either a sled or skins. I've normally always skinned in; it's about 2 miles and 1,400 ft elevation gain. The plateau sits at around 12,300 ft.
Anyhoo, thought I would start putting out the vibe. Been a busy winter for me but looking forward to getting out!

C'mon Nate, Mac is open for business and it'll be prime time to be there by then. Water levels look good this year too.
That said, I love to stay at skyline snowkiting till June if I could swing it.....I get my fill of lake kiting in about a month or so.
Any plans to head east to kite on the water?

Sorry Matt - if I'm going to be burning time away from the family, it's gonna be in the hills. Snow is my favorite aspect of the sport, hands down.
Would love to get back to Skyline eventually - I think the last time I was there was 2006!
