Snowkiting trip to the Dolomites

Postby fernmanus » Tue Jan 26, 2016 7:26 am

I am planning a snowkiting trip for next year. I am thinking that Northern Italy may provide some high mountain riding with beautiful scenery and varied terrain. I have been snowkiting for 15 years in the mountains. I am looking for locations with backcountry riding. I have ski touring gear and I have taken backcountry avalanche safety courses.

Cortina comes up in searches, but the photos seem to be in a limited riding area. I am looking for wide open riding, not limited ski resort areas, nor frozen lakes.

Any recommendations on destinations would be greatly appreciated.

Quite far from the Dolomites but Bernina pass near the italian border is a really good snowkiting location. There are also endless ski touring opportunities in the area.

Alpenvereinaktiv.com is a good source for planning ski tours, with downloadable maps, etc.

The terain in the area is rough, so it is hard to get any decent crosscountry, I guess mainly because the limited wind.
I'v been only at Passo Giau in the area, so take some reserve.
Better to hit N America! :D
