july was the earths hottest month ever
Really? Scientific discussions are probably best not engaged on KF.

https://www.climate.gov/news-features/c ... -ever-been

"None of these techniques help with the very early Earth. During the time known as the Hadean (yes, because it was like Hades), Earth’s collisions with other large planetesimals in our young solar system—including a Mars-sized one whose impact with Earth likely created the Moon—would have melted and vaporized most rock at the surface. Because no rocks on Earth have survived from so long ago, scientists have estimated early Earth conditions based on observations of the Moon and on astronomical models. Following the collision that spawned the Moon, the planet was estimated to have been around 2,300 Kelvin (3,680°F)."

"Even after collisions stopped, and the planet had tens of millions of years to cool, surface temperatures were likely more than 400° Fahrenheit. Zircon crystals from Australia, only about 150 million years younger than the Earth itself, hint that our planet may have cooled faster than scientists previously thought. Still, in its infancy, Earth would have experienced temperatures far higher than we humans could possibly survive."

"The fact that these thick, calcium-rich rock layers sat directly on top of rock deposits left behind by retreating glaciers indicate that temperatures rose significantly near the end of the Neoproterozoic, perhaps reaching a global average higher than 90° Fahrenheit. (Today's global average is lower than 60°F.)"

"During the PETM, the global mean temperature appears to have risen by as much as 5-8°C (9-14°F) to an average temperature as high as 73°F. (Again, today’s global average is shy of 60°F.) At roughly the same time, paleoclimate data like fossilized phytoplankton and ocean sediments record a massive release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, at least doubling or possibly even quadrupling the background concentrations."

Ever begins in 1951.

Completely fair to report on temperatures so I'm not going to say that the media shouldn't, but quite interesting how much air time July has gotten vs. the last 5 years or so being quite flat in terms of increase. Not newsworthy I guess.

And why have the last 5 years been quite flat? Might very well just be random variance, but couldn't July be that as well then?

Again we just completely fail to have a discussion as adults.

No, accurate temperature records begin in the 1880's. Warming is unprecedented in more than 2000 years. This is the warmest multi-century period in more than 100,000 years.

This whole thing here is getting ridiculous.

As we debate our understanding of reality, the fact is that there is a reality that actually exists.

(Matteo v..... come at me, because this is something I'm willing to debate)

The thing is, we can debate our understanding of reality all day long.

Frankly, I don't have any problem with people trying to pick apart a consensus assembled by hundreds of real scientists.

I suppose there are good arguments that only the chosen few have it figured out, and we'll all suffer for not seeing what is really going on.

The thing about reality.... and at this point there is no doubt in my mind we will ever, as a species, be capable of grasping it….

Reality is what it is, and does not care.

So, we can grasp on to the idea that the world is going to hell and it's all our fault.

Or we can grasp on to the Idea that everything is fine, and even if everything is going to hell, it's just a natural process over which we have no control whatsoever.

Everything seems to get framed as a two-sided argument these days....

I propose there is a chance that both sides are wrong.

In the end it will make no difference.

Reality will sort it out. Reality has no regard for any of morals or intentions that many people seem to be pushing here.

Reality simply is what it is.

And to add just a small addendum

The closer you get to reality the better/easier your life gets
The further away from reality you are, the more difficult your life becomes
Eventually

If you say so.

I don’t mean to be rude, but I totally disagree.

Someone once coined the term “ignorance is bliss.”

From my perspective, the more I learn about the world, the more I realize not only the complex difficulty of the problems we face, but also just what a fool I am.

The ignorance is bliss thing seems to works for a while until it blows up in your face. The happy idiot syndrome. Also tends to make life more difficult for the people around you until they blow up at you. But whatever works for you to get you out of bed in the morning to face the insanity.

Ouch, sorry if I offended you, because that was not my intent.

Has the information and knowledge you’ve gleaned from this thread improved your outlook?

It was tongue in cheek. The serious part was I find it interesting that they are usually talking about warming since 1951. Warming started long before that.
