Camping at Skyline?

Postby mmclimbhigh » Tue Dec 08, 2020 12:47 am

Yo!

I have seen previous threads, but did not get a clear answer. Can we camp at Skyline? FourWheelCamper on a Tacoma. Thinking of heading up there for the New Year's weekend (weather dependent, of course).

Cheers!

Free 14 day stay. Vault toilets right there. Move out of the parking lot if they show up to plow it. Head to Strawberry to avoid the whiteout if there is more than a small ammount of snow forecast.

RV dump station is no longer free down at the gas stations in Fairview.

Bring a shovel to help out the 84year old volunteer that snow shovels (by hand) the bathrooms and cleans them. Pitching in puts us a bit ahead of the slednecks that trash up the place.

And pray for snow as Skyline is a bone yard.

How are things looking at Skyline? The Snotel gauge is reading 15". Good to go or still too shallow? Hoping to get up there in a couple of weeks...

Looking from 2000km away, I'd say wait a bit. Snotel is saying only 12inches now. 24in is needed to start to fill in the sage on Bosco. Then you need time for it to firm up. And get a bit of soft on top of that.

What do the sled necks do to trash it up? Beer cans and cig butts?

First off, let me say that the guys showing up with $70,000 worth of truck, and another $60,000 worth of sleds &trailer, are awesome. They almost never leave trash behind, and are conscientious an courteous around kiters. They also leave the kite area looking for good snow in the trees pretty quick. I call these guys "pros". I actually enjoy having them around.

On the other hand, there are the "family groups" that show up with a few older sleds and uncle Bill and aunt Bertha on vacation from Florida. Uncle bill is usually up for just tearing off on a 15 year old sled because he thinks it is just like his friends jetski he used last year back home. This group typically starts a fire ON THE PARKINGLOT, and makes an attempt at burning their trash in it. Any left over trash is put in the toilets, which have no real trash pickup from them. But the 84year old volunteer puts a small bag tied to the handicap rails because it saves him from having to pick up the trash that would just be thrown on the floor. But the burnt coals and firewood along with any broken toboggan/kids sleds are left in the parking lot.

You really need to watch out for the dumber individuals in this group. They are pretty dangerous when on a sled, and the kids sometimes are left fairly unsupervised when out motoring around on the snow.

But that is almost only Saturday, as Sunday church is important to most of the family users up at skyline. And skyline is a really good place for them since you can see the whole area from the parking lot.

So be careful on Saturdays, but we usually have our run of the place, even if the pros are there, the rest of the week.

There is enough snow at Skyline. There are still some rocks and sage showing, but it is snowing as we speak with more in the forecast. Strawberry is still dicey, but may be rideable by New Years or the week following with a number of storms on the way.
