Postby lukaschin » Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:50 am

I am interested in landboarding, but have no idea where to start. It seems lessons are a good thing! I am located just outside nyc, does anyone have any reccomendations?

you need to learn about the wind window first , and i would say get a harness and fly static in a harness and learn to lean back when the power comes in -what kites are you looking at getting , if you have never flown before then i would say get a couple of fixed bridle kites ,(small for higher wind and bigger for lower winds ) , and a petzl rescue pully and a use handles with a rope across the top line which goes tru the roller
i always teach new kiters to start off in a harness from the off and always take the kite up the side of the wind window for takeoff so you take off in the least power zone ,you need to study the wind window , and the zenith

i use a petzl work harness (just the bottom half) and i use a snap shackle to attach the roller to the harness
some might sat get depower kite first , but flying with fixed bridle to learn where the power in the window is,is best in my mind to learn the basics especially if you gonna teach yourself on ya own on a beach far from home

start off like that and report back here :D

I have no idea what the scene is like near NYC but in most places shops don't really sell landboarding lessons, they will have land based kite lessons that will focus only on the kite though.

Find a flat open field/land learn to fly kite static then jump on a board, the best is to learn on a beach with hard sand it's easier to scrub the board on sand than grass which is grippier, the advice above use a harness with a quick release shackle is good, its hard work hanging onto a fixed bridle, good luck it's easier than it seems...

its not hard work hanging on to a fixed bridle with handles and a rope across the top power line that runs tru a roller or petzl rescue pully -attached to your harness as i suggested -read it tru properly plz

Find a venue. Kitesurfing schools often have guys who landboard but may not be advertised. Descide if you want handles or bar. I much prefer a bar for landboarding. If you want a bar get a 3m two line trainer, single line flagging, something like an airush supra. Skateboard truck MTB, kneepads, crash shorts, etc. If minted get a small depower foil or peak 4. Harness and harness line if using trainer bar. Study the vids and remember to turn into wind if going too fast + half a million caveats regarding safety.................

Helmet ........... kite size varies with local conditions and rider size......

I'm curious why you want to specifically learn landboarding? Lessons for both land and water kiteboarding start the same...on land, with a trainer kite. Then the next step is actually much safer in the water, for fairly obvious reasons (you get pulled off the board and dragged by the kite...). If your ultimate goal is specifically landboarding, water kiteboarding is probably the safer/easier (to find) way to learn. Then once you're skills are decent you can focus on land.

Back in the day before depower kites, many considered it safer to learn landboarding before taking on the power required for water. If I were teaching a friend I would still teach a bit of landboarding before water as basic riding can be done with little power and communication is so much easier plus I live next to an ideal venue. However, if you then want to progress with power to jump I would definitely recommend getting on the water for that!
