Naish Boxer 10m 19/20

Postby riddim1 » Sat Dec 21, 2019 11:19 pm

I couldn’t find any reviews on the new Boxer in a wave riding scenario so thought I’d post my own.

I’m 88kgs. Been kiting since 2004 and have been on Naish for 10 years now. I love riding waves on a directional but find myself on a foil more and more due to a lack of decent waves :x

I purchased a 19/20 10m Boxer recently as a light wind kite to foil with. Have only had it out a couple of times as the wind has been consistently over 20 knots at my local. Spent last weekend at a wave spot with clear cross-shore conditions. The wind was around 16 knots gusting to 22. I would normally ride waves with my 7m Slash but the sweep was taking some speed out of the wind so opted for the new 10m Boxer.

Pros:
Felt the kite performed really well through the wind range. Have heard it has a narrow wind range and tops out early however I didn’t get this impression over a directional. I didn’t have to dial-in any de-power during the gusts. Edging the board worked well enough. The power of the kite is very ‘on-off’ which worked well when stalling for the swell and waiting for the set wave to come in. What surprised me most was it’s drifting abilities. Thought I’d struggle to drift it due to the one strut however I felt the high inflation pressure (11psi) and the diagonal seam in the canopy worked well together to keep the kite stable. I could get 3 turns in on the right waves with the kite overhead drifting with me. I was not expecting this at all.

Cons:
I felt the kite turned slow for the conditions. My biggest kites for the last 8 years has been 9m 3-strut wave kites and would have influenced my experience. I needed to pull the steering line directly when down looping to keep the kite in front of the wave. This worked well though and didn’t affect my session.

Interested in others experiences as well.

Hi,
thank you for sharing. Great reading.

I am mostly used to waves with 7m2 or smaller waves. I started foiling, and thinking about changing my old freeride 3-strut kites 9-12m2, for some more foil orientated 1-strut kites. Here I consider the Boxer.

First question:
What size will ideally follow my 7m2 wave kite? My 9m2 freeride kite is fine when the wind drops and the 7m2 gets too small, but how with the Boxer? It will be used both for waves and foil (currently I have same size kite whether on a directional or foil). 1-strut kites are better in the low end? So maybe 8m2 boxer is the way to go? And next could be 11m2 boxer for light wind foiling?

Second question:
How much difference between Boxer 2019/2020 and the new 2020/2021?

And BTW, why do Naish name it s25?

Kind regards, Mikkel

One more thing: you write that a 9m2 3 strut wave kite is faster turning than a 10m2 1-strut kite?

Maybe I could also stick with my 9m2 3-strut freeride kite for both waves and foiling, and just go for a single 1-strut kite for light wind foiling..

I think Naish Sails (Windsurf sails) was founded 25 years ago (the Naish brand itself is older than that) and Naish Sails was the starting point for the kites.

I believe the only difference of 20/21 to 19/20 is the inflation system (now SUP valve and standard one pump instead of Octopus system) and one different seam in the canopy.

Did they drop the LE battens in 19? If not, there are no more battens in 2020.

That's what I did first and it'S a good strategy but there is still a big advantage to a 9M single strut. I started with a 12M Ultra and it works good for foiling probably around 6 knots to 15 comfortably and 20 in survival mode. But the 9M Boxer that I have works from about 8 knots to 20 comfortably and being lighter and drifting very well when you charge downwind if will stay in the air really well. The 9M freeride will want to back stall and fall from the sky you have to work it to keep it flying it's doable but not ideal.

Thank you for the input. Very appreciated.

Instead of my freeride 9m2 kite, I also consider a 9m2 wave kite. This is to insure a kite for crossover between waves and foil. Maybe a bit more drift in the wave kite. However, freeride or wave kite 9m2, all on all this is more or less the same.

It sounds amazing with a 9m2 single strut used from 6 knots. I am still on a level with foil, where I need some power to go. I use similar size on waveboard and on foil.

Still, my consideration is whether I should add a 9m2 wave kite and e.g. 11m2 Boxer, or a 8m2 and 11m2 Boxer to my 7m2-4m2 wave kites.

Go both the 11 and 8 in single strut. The 8m will be your main kite for foiling and it will be a great wave kite crossover.

I've been riding the first Boxer 2017/2018 for foiling in sizes 10 and 8
I didn't use the 10 a lot on the foil because the 8m started very early and really was a joy to ride.
Then I went on a kite trip and didn't take anything else and used them for the first time in the waves. It is an excellent wave kite, powerfull with a good drift.
Only thing is it doesn't like to be ridden overpowered as it starts to flap and get unstable (you feel it in the bar).

BUT for me you should compare a 9m 3-strut kite to a 8m Boxer in terms of wind range. Then 8m Boxer turns faster.

I second the 11 + 8 quiver

Today I have slash 9/7/5 and a Boxer 12m for light wind. And a separate quiver for foiling (Clouds which are also excellent in the surf but that's another topic)
