A Scottish surfer was rescued after 32 hours at sea. It is not particularly warm in Northern Europe these days.. He must have worn an excellent wetsuit/drysuit... I would be curious to find out what he was wearing..

Water temps round here (Scotland) in May are about 9.5C (49F) and air temps were around the same in the day.

You can read some details here:

I generally stay in a drysuit year-round except summer, where I used to use a 5/3 ti lined steamer and be super-hot (considering a shorty). But I normally ditch the hood/gloves/boots by about March because it's getting warm enough not to care and by October it's coming back around to glove time again.

Not uncommon for people to be out kiting in wetsuits in snow and when streams are freezing on the beach though.

there's a lesson here. Stay near your flotation. In this case rescuers credit the surfer staying near his surfboard for his survival. If you kite, and can't get back to shore, stay near your kite and use it for flotation by climbing on top of it. Even if you can't swim it will keep you above water. That's how you beat hypothermia.

Unless you're on a foil kite :)
