Reconnect after flag out

Postby Planemad » Thu Jul 21, 2022 9:40 pm

Hi. I just wanted to get some opinions. The scenario where you flag out. Pull up the line, reconnect chicken loop, let go of flag out line, and re launch. It's gotta be dangerous.? Any situation where you would do this? Cheers

Its not ideal, but it definitely happens. I've done this a few times and it was always because of an accidental ejection in a circumstance where I don't want to (or can't) go back to shore. Make sure the lines don't get wrapped around anything and don't hold onto any lines when the kite powers up!

Really depends on the conditions and the bar. If you flag and everything does not get wrapped up and the wind and waves are not too big or gusty should not have any issues. The key is to do everything slowly. Slowly work the flag out line thru the loop and if the kite starts to act crazy you just let go. Not going to work every time and every time it might be better to just self rescue. Experience is where you learn when you can and cannot do it.

under 20 knots go for it, not too dangerous above that use your discretion

Thanks for the comments!! 👍🏽. Wind came up on me. 1st time it worked, retrieved the board, and got going. Was over powered. Just an intermediate kiter.2nd time not so good. Death loss, bad!! Ejected!! Definately a tricky manoeuver. I think I'll pick my spots, nice onshore, where I never have 2 do it!! Risk factor is up there!!

My one and only flag out and attempt to reconnect was in overpowered gusty conditions. When attempting a transition I caught a gust with the kite around zenith and when lofted a bit I swung under the kite and it was going to invert, so I pulled the safety flag out. Kite flagged out OK and after I swam in about 200 yards I attempted a reconnect as the winds had come down somewhat. Bad move for me as a gust caught the kite just before I hooked in and ripped the bar from my hands. Due to the extreme tension the safety line disconnected completely releasing the kite (not sure how that happened after I examined my gear later). Fortunately a friend retrieved my kite/bar/lines.

It can be tricky in strong wind shallow water. If you're lines are not tangled and your kite doesn't start looping it may be fairly easy to do. If things go bad you may have to ditch everything I had to one time. A few times I was able to swim to the kite roll the lines and come back to shore in rescue mode that's the safest situation.
