Windy spots in South Europe during winter

Postby Kerplow » Tue Aug 03, 2021 8:45 am

Hi guys,

I was wondering if there are any windy spots during winter in south of Europe? I know Tarifa very well, but are there any other spots with relatively warm air temperature and at least 12knots constant wind. Late autum-winter-early spring.

Thanks!

Fuerteventura and Tenerife. With Fuerteventura beeing the windier if the two. At least that was the case last Christmas when I've been in Tenerife.

well, not sure if Canaries are still in Europe :P but most probably they still ok for OP since he 'liked' the answer
I haven't been to any of two @mountain_lake mentioned, but from posts I've read in the internets my conclusion, contrary to @mountain_lake's opinion, would be that Fuerte is slightly overrated & Tenerife is better in winter period (and probably in summer too TBH. & no, I don't own kiting school or rent-out aptmnt in Tenerife :P ) .

Anyway, since there's no thermics in winter, I guess just by running through couple years of windguru archive for period you interested in, you'll know the answer

ohhh, and btw - yes, these 2 + Tarifa would probably be the best out of warm places in Europe* . If just for kiting, I'd consider Ireland too, but I understand some ppl may not exactly love kiting in 5/4 wetsuit with boots & gloves + maybe self launching in 40 knots (other than Dublin, most spots are rather empty in winter, especially during working days)

*see remark in 1st sentence :naughty:

Thanks for your answers guys.

Actually yes, Tenerife and Fuerteventura are not geographically Europe. Since we plan to travel with car, it's not reachable at the moment. Meaning, when C19 hit, Spain stopped all ferries to Morocco (Initially we planned to visit Dakhla as well).

Thanks guys and any recommendations are very welcome. Cheers!

You could try the area between Montpellier and Marseille. I've only been there in summer, and you typically get two types of wind systems for a few days at a time that produce 12 knot and above wind from about lunchtime untill the afternoon. But I've been in that general area in winter too and there is wind. According to this it should be better than summer even.
