Travel destination Jan/Feb

Postby hotracer » Fri Aug 27, 2021 3:43 pm

Hi
Well I guess everyone is affected one way or another by Covid, be it, getting it, being locked down, not being able to travel or in some other way, and this post is not about whether one believes in it or not or about vaccination, it's about trying to figure out a place to go next winter, where you will still feel more or less safe and not have to worry about getting trapped in a lock down situation. So any recommendations would be great, some cheap and windy, usually we do Vietnam every year but no it's closed shop for a while so trying to figure something else!

Cabo Verde. If only there will be flights to get there.

I was there in Feb. Not many restrictions (masks inside, clubs closed, one had to take antigen test result prior to arrival). Excellent kiting: about 75-80% of windy days (and I only count 16+ knots days, I'm big fellow so lightwind is no joy for me) + actual conditions almost perfectly match windguru's GFS13/27 model, so just check archive to get idea when to go & when not. At main spot wave far more forgiving than many say, but if you want nasty one, you just go to the other side of the island.
Downwinds, good food & what not.

Really difficult to predict how the world looks in January/February. Clearly South Africa didn't go all that well last winter. I doubt they will lock down the same way this winter (or summer for them), but you never know. Right now they are worse off what they were 1 year ago.

Zanzibar is decent in January.

Anywhere Caribbean is nice….Colombia recommended.
Don’t know about travel restrictions.

Brazil is easy. Winds can be awesome, sometimes, or rainy…but normally always wind.
This year During that time was awesome !
Not sure what happens next year.
But, Brazil is big. From what I heard a bit further south of Ceara, you will find winds.

Most places now are open again but there are still travel restrictions to places overseas! CDC released a map that has high restrictions. You can check the list of countries on their site. For US, All air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before they board a flight to the United States. To maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, get vaccinated as soon as you can and wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.

Jamaica is not a good place for now to travel. The CDC raised its travel advisory to 'Level 4: Very High' for Jamaica, Lebanon, and Sri Lanka! The CDC increased travel advisories on Tuesday to "Level 4: Do Not Travel" for those countries, indicating they have "a very high level of COVID-19 in the country." The health warning cautions potential travelers that "health risks are present, including current disease outbreaks or crises that disrupt a country's medical infrastructure."

My best guess is South Africa will be fine as so many people have actually had the virus (80% on some estimates, based on an analysis of serum and mortality statistics). Vaccination rates may be low (15%) but vastly more have had it and recovered (or died :-? ). Taking it all together I would be very surprised if there is a lockdown this Summer (Nov-March).

having had the virus (or being vaccinated) doesn't mean you are imune for the rest of your life.
But I hope you are right, I am coming for Xmas and at the end of januari :-)

This will be the season to come to Cape Town, I'm taking my family for December/January. Flat rentals are cheap and kiting is fantastic. Rent a car and explore the area, go east if no wind in Cape Town. If you are bold, go to Cape Point for extreme wind. Covid cases are low, infection rates last surge were high, vaccine rollout underway, very unlikely to have another lockdown this coming summer.
