Barbados wave riding

Postby seking » Sat Jan 24, 2009 7:00 am

I am looking for some info/advice from anybody who has been to Barbados recently. I have next week off and was planning a trip to PR but the waves and wind aren't looking good. The forecast for Barbados looks better but not sure if its worth the extra money. Any advice or info on the island, conditions, places to stay would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

if it is the coming week you will have wind 20 to 25 knots (a bit more then on windfinder). Good direction (side-shore), wave coming from the right direction also. Not huge but you should have some 2m faces I guess

There are 3 spots: Silversands, Silverrock and long beach. Search the forum and you will find plenty on information on those spots and accomodation.

I was there in december and had the best wave sessions ever. This was taken with similar conditions/forecast:

Nice video !

I'm going down Feb 14-21 and hope to learn how to ride a surfboard. As an intermediate I going to take some lessons there. Do you think it is a reasonable place to begin on a surfboard ? From what I've read the reef seems to moderate the waves near shore. Any thoughts ?

the reef is 200m from the beach break (I mean shore break, no waves to ride)
the reef is quiet deep like 2m
it is excellent to learn to ride a directional but it is not a place for newbies as there is no backup if something happens (rocks...).

longbeach is therefor safer but you need to deal with the shorebreak. Some nice waves breaking close to the shore.

You will have a nice time for sure !
