1 or 2 weeks portugal or canaries?

Postby yzbob » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:54 am

Hi ,

I'm based in the UK, and looking to go somewhere to kite for 2 or 3 weeks, sometime after April 12th or in sometime in May, as I stated i only have 1 kite (12m Vegas), my budget is US $3000 all in, but might stretch it if something look particularly interesting.

Looking for suggestions, and as I'm probably going myself, anyone that might be interested in joining me or let me join them?

I'd be looking for kiting during the days and a few beers and good conversation at night.

suggestions on a postcard :thumb:
cheers

Bob

yup, Texas sounds like a blast!

Egypt should be good too...and much cheaper than your budget.

hi Bob

We need some more info here dude to help you out.

Are you looking for flat water , waves , partying? Everything ?

i'll be in egypt from 27th April. Managed to get a great 5* hotel for £395.00 pp including food and drink on icelolly.com

This will be my fiorst trip to egypt , but i hear its great for clear flat waist deep water... Not sure what its like for partying , but i guess i'll find out soon enough.

Also cabarete is a geat spot for waves, and partying. (i'm yet to find any decent flat spots here but maybe the more experienced will know of one ?) You can fly return from Uk for around £400 and the wind in may is pretty good. You can get acomodation for pretty cheap , but make sure you stay in cabarete and not sosua or puerto plata. I have a place in Royal residence right in the centre of town if you are stuck. It's rented out , but i know plenty of the owners in the same complex and could get you a deal. Its in a top location and close to everything.

Mar menor , spain is decent in may . Good flat water , and waves. Lots of bars and clubs , but will likley be quiet in may esp with the bad EU vs £ rate.

With the money you save , you can get yourself another kite... I hear kitesurf Warehouse in the UK do some great deals , but i happen to be very biased and am also a shameless pimp... :jump:

If you decide on Egypt , i'll happily hook up with you for a few sessions.

For me the nightlife in Egypt was never really good. But the water is just beautiful!

Make sure to make a trip to Tawila!!!

thanks guys,

looked into some of those and they all look pretty good, I'm not looking for party central just somewhere i can meet some people to have a beer with at night, maybe 1 or 2 bigger nights over the course of the holiday.

south padre looks like it could be the most fun but most expensive travelling from uk.

Egypt value for money is awesome, kite conditions would be great but worried it might be full of couples and families with not a lot of people to hang out with afterwards?

caberete on windfinder doesn't look like the wind is great at that time ? could be hit or miss?
but more likely to find night life, (my kiting is not up to riding in waves yet.)

the other option i've found is Portugal, possibly Peniche (maybe to waveish) or around Albufeira, mainly cause of the cheap very convenient flights/acc

anyone been around those areas?

kitesurfwarehouse if i do end up in Egypt i'll take u up on those sessions. and that icelolly site is pretty good for deals never seen it before.

thanks again for the suggestions, now i got some tough decisions (i suppose there are worse things to be deciding on) :D

I'm now going with a non-kiter and the choice is narrowed down to Grand Canaria, Fuerteventura, or the Algarve (Lagos/Alvor)

if you had the choice of a week or 2 in one of those places, mid May, which one would you hedge your bets on having the best wind?

I now have a 9m & 12m Vegas, 140cm by 45cm board and I'm 79kg (over estimate originally).

intermediate kiter - can ride ok and stay upwind but cant really do anything else.

hoping to book in the next couple of days so any replies greatly appreciated,

thanks

bob
