Sri Lanka - Kalpitya

Postby paleita73 » Tue Jan 10, 2012 4:52 am

Hallo folks,
I am living in Sri Lanka for a while and would be willing to learn Kite surfing.
The best spot around is for sure Kalpitya but I am quite confused about how many schools and facilities are in that area.
Could anybody help me out?
any suggestion on which one of the schoos I should go to?
Thanks,
ciao

There are at least three that I counted. Some are more informal.

The two times I was there I watched these guys operate:
http://www.srilankakiteschool.com/

They ran a pretty good operation and their students appeared to learn quite well. They have a very small lagoon that is nice and shallow in some parts that is very conducive to learning. The area is small so over the course of three days I watched the students progress and was impressed with it.

The small flat water lagoon is great for intermediate and experts as well. It really forces you to just practice the same trick over and over again until you nail it. On the other side of the beach is the ocean and you can have some pretty good waves there with miles of empty beach. It's really an ideal place for kiting.

There operation actually has vehicle transportation to and from a small complex they have built and they cater for you at around 50-60 euros a day, which although steep for the region, is probably worth it if you aren't on a backpackers budget. Each time I went, I came last minute and they were fully booked.

Sri Lanka has very little tourist infrastructure in this area, so basically if you just show up at that lagoon you will find almost nothing there. So you need to book with them ahead of time. Otherwise you'll need to find a willing family to take you in etc. It's a bit complicated. I ended up staying at a resort that cost quite a bit more.

This time of year January- March is the off season. There is not a ton of wind, but since you are local you can probably arrange with one of the local instructors for something when the wind picks up. One of the guys is a regular on this forum and he's really helpful. His name is Dilsiri.

I'll probably see you there starting next Monsoon. In the mean time, you might consider hopping a flight to Thailand.

Thanks CT!

I actually found also:

- http://www.kitesurfinglanka.com that seems to have the someone named Dilsiri as contact too, is it the same school?
and
- http://www.elements-resort.com/activities.htm

I am a beginner and was thinking to get some trining before the big season start so I can be in pretty good conditions when the big winds will be coming.

I also think at the beggining I will take day rides to the place, so no need to arrange for accomodations, I live pretty close but would not be able to make it there to kite on Saturday afternoon, Sunday is my only chance!

Yes thats the same Dil. You might be able to work something more casual out with him.

As for KiteKuda they are a pretty well organized operation (less casual), If you check out their facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/Kitekuda

You'll see very recent photos which appear to show that they are indeed operational this time of year. In the past I don't think they did much instruction this time of year, but I think now that they have permanent buildings set up, and this also being the high normal tourist season, it would appear that they have met demand.

It's a good 3 hour drive up from Columbo on some pretty rough roads.

Myself and another instructor from The Kitesurfing Collective have just come from a month R&D in Sri Lanka - we were based just south of Kalpitya. The wind is still there at this time of the year - it ususally doesn't blow until midday or just after, but then it sets in until dark at around 6pm. The cycle goes 3 days on, 2-3 days off. Even though this is their off season; it is still better than the on season in many places I've kited!

Both Elements (who fly Faith - Disliri is the Sri Lankan rep for them) and Kite Kuda (who fly North) are running in Kappaladi and I think that there are a couple of school running out of hotels in Kalpitya. Shoot me an email if you wanted any more info/contacts in the area :)

Looking for a location around mid Sep.
Sri lanka looks good.

How busy is Kalpitaya ?
I mean, three schools operating on one lagoon might be to crowded.
