Maui

Postby TheJoe » Thu Jul 16, 2015 2:41 pm

Headed out to Maui tomorrow and the forecast looks meh. Should I be worried? The Weather channel shows low 20's falling off to mid teens for my trip and Sailflow shows even less.

Bring a 10 or 12m and you will be fine. Forecast is usually 5 lower than reality.

You shouldn't be worried - there's a lot to do on Maui. Driving around the island is not one of them.

If you engage in that island, you can learn and experience a lot. For example, snorkeling. Go snorkel at Hookipa (Yes hookipa) and Kanaha. Learn about what's below the surface of the kite spots, you might be shocked.

Makawao forest reserve (it's free). The trail which is suitable for walking or biking - built by the owner of Rockshox. You can rent a very high end mountain bike for around $50 from Krank. If you are not a cyclist, it will be painful but rewarding.

Haleakala - No need to go there for the sunrise (lots of traffic), go there for the sunset or night skies. There are world class telescopes up there, meaning the sky is one of the world's cleanest and darkest (free of light pollution). If you go there in day, hike into INTER Haleakala, you will be on mars (but on earth).

Surfing - South swell on now, no experience required, 2-3ft up to whatever.

Check local newspaper from Starbucks, mall, etc. - there's tons of local events (the best and free).

In terms of food and nightlife, Paia = nothing special, South side = nothing special. Special = Kahului foodland Poke, fried chicken, musubi. Special = Diners/bars in Wailuku.

You will see real Maui man. Kiting is world class but it's only a spec of what the island is. Beautiful place

Also a note regarding wind, if windguru is saying 10-12mph, there's possibility of good wind (for 12-14m) despite 10-12mph being really light. The thermal builds it. But it all depends on direction. If windguru is forecasting anything but N,NE,E, or S (Kona wind), then forget it. Go do the other activities.

Aloha
