Miami in Oct and Nov

New job means I'll be down in Miami for the next 2 months learning to fly the B777 and plan on de-stressing from sim by kiteboarding. Like to get some information on typical winds I can expect, what spots are available, water temps, etc etc. Plan on bringing my hydrofoil with me as well but need to know if I'll require a wetsuit, where I CAN'T kite and so on. Much appreciated.

hi,

wind hasn't been great here. water is super warm though so don't worry bout a wetsuit. i'll be around and looking for people to kite with 8,9,10th and then 16th Oct for a month, im free all the time. i'd really like to rent a boat some weekend and kite off one of the sandbars in the keys if wind and price and gf all fall into alignment.

Lots of rules and restrictions in and around Miami. I think this was the latest official status but i could be wrong so anyone feel free to correct me.

October and November are 'windy season' in south Florida. Expect to kite twice or three times a week in average with winds between 15 and 20 knots. And some days over 20 knots. I guess you won't miss your foil if you like riding a twin tip.

Wind on fall is mainly from cold fronts, so a suit is a must for most people. I get away most of the time with a 2/3 mm long legs and short sleeves.

So hopefully some Miami kiters can chime in here on where they ride.
I'll be there first week of December for work and have a few days off to kite. Hoping to ride with some others to share the stoke.

The article says anything north of 29th street, stay 200ft away from the shore, 50 ft away from any swimmers. I'm on board with that.

I see 87th street being listed as a spot. Anywhere else? I'm assuming the wind is pretty much the same between 29th and 96th.
Do people just set up wherever it looks less crowded along the beach and then self launch?

No, don’t launch just anywhere!
Stick to the kite beaches...On Miami South Beach 29th or 76th.

Great! That's what i'm looking for! 29th street or 76th.
I always check with a locals before riding anyplace new to me. Looking to find the locals..

Nothing is listed on splocs for 76th street, but the article says its the beginner teaching/learning zone.
25th and north of 30th: "Respected kite zone is a small patch at 25th street and then north of 30th" (presumably setup at 29th and then ride north?)
87th street: "Kitesurfers should go to the left of the beach access. Don't ride to the right, where the life guards are on duty"

Thanks!

That link doesn’t work Toby and there’s really not that information out there on where exactly you can kite. Can’t do Crandon because I never got around to getting a cert lvl and really don’t have time while I’m here to do it. I know this area is a little “sensitive” to kiteboarders right now so I don’t want to cause any problems.

Any locals on that I can the insight. Here for two months for new job training, can only kite on the weekends. Brought my twintip and foil so hopefully can go out every weekend.

I was there last winter and i think you have to have an IKO card and i think some kind of liability insurance for Crandon...29th street i guess i met some really nice kiters....really groovy folks and a happening scene. I think they all wanted you to have an IKO card so you dont ruin it for everyone.
